Hey Guys,

First of all, I want to thank you guys for all the awesome info. I have learned so much surfing this forum. I wish I would have found it sooner. Oo.

I am working on putting my signature together but in the meantime here are the specs on my truck: 2004. 5 2500 4x4 quad cab short bed with the only mod being a Rokktech adj. timing sensor. I have noticed blue smoke coming from the exhaust when I start it after an extended period of time of sitting, like overnight. It puffs blue smoke for 5-10 seconds then quits. Once it is warmed up then shut down, as long as it is started within several hours, no smoke, but if it sits overnight, then it smokes. I changed the oil in 6K mile intervals and it only gets down half way through the cross-hatch on the dip stick by the time 6K miles roll around. It doesn't seem like it is using hardly any oil. I took it to the dealer twice and they couldn't replicate the problem. This is my first diesel and I need some guidance. Thanks in advance for your help!!

My 04. 5 did the same thing. I think what it is causing the quick puff of real diesel smoke is the cat is not up to temp yet. After it has been running for a few seconds the things starts blowing white smoke and starts smelling... . er stinking, like a clark forklift running on propane.

My 04. 5 does it too. It sounds like its not hitting on all 6, I fliped the pacbrake on and it seems to help by heating the cyl's up maybe. I have also heard people say that bad relief valves can do it as well?

BTW phloop, I dont have a cat and mine does it when it sits for a few days. If it sits and cools off for a few hours it wont do it.

My 05 does the same thing. It seems to idle a little rough, smoke and stink for about a min. then it smooths out and nothing else. I never see it at except first start up in the AM.

My 04. 5 does it too - for 10-15 seconds that I can see from inside... perhaps a tad bit longer if you're staring at the exhaust pipe. I think kitty wandered during the conversion, but the blue stuff doesn't last much past the end of my driveway.

Looking at the other responses - I think you can chalk it up to "not warmed up yet!". We've got grid heaters, and even down below freezing it doesn't last much longer.

FYI - Mark

Thank you

Thanks guys for the responces. I guess I will not worry about it. Is it something that is noticed on the 2003 and early 2004's? since they didn't have a kitty? Is is normal for a diesel to puff a little blue smoke?

My '05 has done this a couple of times. Won't do it regularly, so no point in taking it to the dealer as they "cannot replicate issue". :rolleyes: :-{}
