The truck below has 61,000 miles. I have noticed the last two times coming home down an interstate grade with cruise on at about 2200 rpms in good weather that I am blowing a fair amount of blue smoke. Truck seems to be otherwise running ok. But there is enough blue smoke to make me think something must be wrong. Any ideas?

Blue smoke on deceleration usually indicates valve seals leaking. another symptom would be blue smoke when you first crank after sitting overnite.

Since a diesel engine does not pull a vacuum when you let off the throttle, the valve stem seals are probably not the problem. You may have a leaking seal in the turbo. If so you better get it taken care of immediately. You can check this by pulling the intake tube off the turbo and looking inside.

Generally, any oil residue on the compressor side of the turbo, when you take off the boot, is considered bad. The seals in your turbo could be going out and the problem should be corrected quickly. This is a complete guess, but one another avenue could be some bad exhaust valves, but I think you would notice a performance issue along that route.

The verdict is officially in--it is the VP44 injection pump. Has anyone had any trouble with warranty for the VP44? I am still under warranty by a mere 4 months.

Well here is some hopefully surprisingly good news. The dealer has replaced the injector pump and lift pump under warranty. I still need to pick up the truck and drive it to see how it performs. But that is good news given the fact that I am 4 months from being out of warranty.

Here is the story. Took the truck in and they verified the P0216 code. Tech first installed the new transfer/lift pump at the new location in the tank and cleared the code. Then drove the truck and it it coded the P0216 again. Then Tech replaced injector pump. Drove the truck again and no codes. The Tech told me he has installed about 30 transfer/lift pumps in the tank location and to the best of his knowledge none of those have experienced any problems.

My initial complaint was that the truck was blowing blue smoke under compression during down hill deceleration. I have since driven my truck down the same hill twice and have not detected any blue smoke. But, the blue smoke was when I had my EZ installed and I have not reinstalled it yet. I will be able to verify over the weekend whether the blue smoke was related to the injector pump failure. Stay tuned.

sound like a timing problem in the pump and when u let off the truck loads up. with the box unhooked you dont have the same pump conditions. . in curious too. . having the smoke on start up intermit. not on deaccel though. .

Let us know if this fixed the problem... ...
hey doug what about oil smelling blue smoke at start up?
Just did my valve lash to . 008 int. and . 018 ex -warm 170* or so and it helped my top-end lowered my peak boost too. Not sure if something might have fell in (maybe insulation) when I had the cover off or not, whould something blocking the oil from draining off the head cause this? I also recently extended my oil breather hose down to my axle and I notice a good amount of blowby smoke when I let it idle to cool-downis this nomal looks like a jolly older guy sucking on a good sized cigar to be exact. Thanks in advance for your knowledge.

Also fuel pressure pegs my 30# isspro always at idle not sure if this is a factor.

any new news. . still battling mine, swapped to stock sticks. swapped to a loaner turbo... still have the problem. .

What sort of enviroment do you run in? and with what air filter?

Me personally I ran a k&n for a long time stock and live on a 2+ miles dirt road so I ditched the k&n for a regular blue AFE. Not truley satisfied im not killing my rings so I am going to order the pro gaurd 7 for the extra protection.

Blue smoke on decel or a little white smoke at idle are symptoms of a dying VP44.

Oh Oh. I see a little white smoke at idle sometimes. Good thing I have a HRVP 44 coming in about a week. :D

After the injection pump and lift pump were replaced I tied to get my truck to blow blue smoke before reconnecting the EZ. No blue smoke on deceleration. Finally reconnected the EZ today and took the truck for a test drive with someone behind me to look for blue smoke on same exact hill where before it blew quite a bit of blue smoke. NO blue smoke. Conclusion: VP44 was obvious source of problem. Now cured. Hope this is help to someone!

Mine did the same thing before the new VP was installed. I never noticed it 'till I happen to walk behind the rig after a hard run. Just a wisp of blue smoke but I knew it was supposed to do that.

After the dealer swapped out the VP. . no more smoke. Should have figured it out sooner but the truck was running fine otherwise.
