during cold startup (and when engine is a little warm) in the morning and afternoon, when i first crank up my truck, it runs rough, and really blows blue smoke (not white or lt gray) it also blows a little blue smoke @ around 25-2700 rpm also (in neautral). maybe the injectors are bad? i am worried that it could be the rings or turbo. could you guys help me out with identifieng the source.

thanx

Every now and then mine will blue smoke very very lightly when it is cold and just started. I read somewhere on here that a little blue smoke was normal in cold weather when the engine wasn't warm, but someone on here will probalby try and diagnose us with problems. :-laf

I only noticed it after I added an Edge EZ. Don't know if that had anything to do with it or not.

Hey guys, note that he's from south Louisiana... I'm guessing 'cold' to him means something like 50*... which is what a lot of us mean by 'warm'

My truck does the same thing and is getting worse every year at least the rough running part, I think it is the injectors on mine as they have a lot of miles on them. The way it smokes I would think mine was rings but I only use a quart of oil to about 2500 miles so I don't think they are too bad and when warmed up their is no blue smoke.

I am also interested in everybody elses opinion on this.

A real quick test well tell you wether it's fuel causing the blue smoke. Stand back by your exhaust pipe with the truck idleing, if the smoke starts to burn your eyes it's fuel if not it's something else. Works better to do this in a shop that has a ventalation fan you can turn on and off. When I rebuilt my orginal 160hp injectors the smoke would burn my eyes pretty good.

Right around 200k. I was having excessive smoke problems and it was a combination of the injectors and bad seals in the turbo (which was the main culprit). But at the time I rebuilt them they were at the bottom end of being ok.

smoke ?

what is the mileage on the engine and what kinda oil are u using blue means oil consumption which could being coming from bad rings or turbo is there oil leaking out of the turbo clamps on the exhaust ?or blow by the rough idle sounds like low compression which will cause it to blow blue smoke its using more oil when its cold but not on long trips?

I have heard that it is about the same price to rebuild the injectors as purchase new ones did you find this to be true? Tonight when I started my truck I paid more attention and I could feel it Picking up the next cylinder. I have thought it was injectors for a long time I think it is time to rebuild or replace them. Did you ever ask around to see if anybody had low mile used ones or is that not a good idea. Would injectors out of a 180hp be better I know they are touch bigger.

It cost me about $260 for the 215 nozzle tips and all the other lil washers needed acouple years ago. I would expect atleast another $50 on top of that for labor if you had somebody rebuild them. That puts the price around $310 or so which is getting pretty close to a set of 370s on sale. I sold my used rebuilt injectors here a few months ago and the guy is yet to install them so I dont know how they have worked out for him, so it's not a bad idea just have to be careful I guess kinda like used cars. If you do rebuild them go straight for the 215 injector tips or if you buy a used set get the 215s. There worth about 20hp on a 160hp pump.
