Killed my NP205

Since i have owned my truck (7 yrs) i get blue-white smoke at start-up until engine warms up in winter or summer. It will also smoke blue-white smoke under full throttle on the highway, i can see the blue haze behind me when really getting on it, but there is no smoke when just cruising under light throttle. Also, even with truck warmed up it will start smoking like this if i hold brake and give it fuel standing still. My timing is advanced to about 14* btdc with no change. A friend of mine who builds motors suggested to me that the problem is rings and poor compression that gets better when engine is warm. Oil consumption is about 1. 5 qts in 5000 miles which don,t seem to be excessive to me. Anyone have any opinions on this smoke problem? Also, does engine have to be pulled to replace rings if it ever come to that?

I would tend to lean toward injectors or other fuel system components. Blue smoke in a diesel CAN mean worn rings, but in my experience with 8 of these things, it has been fuel system related in all my cases. Even installing different thickness injectors has made a difference in some cases. i would get the injectors pop tested, then see if your KSB is functioning properly. ALso make sure your intake heaters work as well. May advance your timing a bit more- to 1. 5-1. 55mm @ TDC (not sure how that converts to deg BTDC) after the injector reset. Unless your truck has towed all its life, loaded to the max rated GCVWR, I'd bet a case of your favorite beverages that the injectors or other fuel system parts need attention. It aint the miles, it's the years in this case.

If it was rings it would pretty much be all the time with the smoke. Blue-white smoke is generally unburned fuel. On a cold start it is normal. On a warm start or under a load warmed up is not normal. It is a sign of late timing on the injection event.

At 150k you are due for a pop test on the injectors and probably getting into the pump rebuild area. If the pump has never been off there are updated parts that will last a lot longer than the OEM and directly address the issue you are seeing. A lot depends on the diesel and additives you have used over the years as to how long the injection system lasts.

The pw bosch 185 injectors were put in about 50,000 miles ago. Maybe i need a different thickness on the injector spacers, but i think they just sent me the one set from city diesel in texas. The truck will smoke blue-white under load even when warm, and all the time when cold until warmed up. Does motor have to be pulled for a overhaul? I probably will never need an overhaul but was just wondering?

Hi RD how you doing?

I installed your old set of injectiors yesterday. They are working better than the old ones I pulled out. Thank you.

Off hand, I'd say its time for a pump rebuild. :(

Doing a compression leak down test will tell you if you have problems in cylinder sealing. Might be worth the effort before you start pulling things apart. :)

I'm not seeing any odd color(s) of smoke at anytime with 320+K miles on a 90% OEM engine. I advanced the timing a small amount and turned the fuel screw in to run-a-way point. aFe filter. Outside that, it's pretty much original equipment.

It's slow idle quality is in the toilet and it has white smoke when started cold. Outside that it will run with the best of them.
