The old 95 with red paint is starting to look bad, paint delaming from primeron the hood and top of fenders, kinda sandy looking, or big case of orange peel.

I may get it ready to paint and pay someone to shoot the color. Question is, can the black trim pieces that run the length of the cab and bed be saved. My first thought is to use a heat gun to soften the adheasive and try and peel them off, then glue back on.

Would this work, or do you just need to bend over at the dealership and buy new ones.

Thanks, RJR

If they are worth saving, then they can be saved. Just point them to the sun and let them warm up, then slowly peel off. Use a heat gun if you have one, but be careful not to melt the trim.

Clean up the backside (the biggest part of the job), and go to your local auto parts store and pickup some 3M automotive tape to stick them back on with.

The glue bond can be broken by using some IPA (Isoapropal Alcohol). Use a little squeeze bottle and flow a little IPA onto the seam and pull. It will come off. Takes a little bit, but it works. ;)

That's the easy part. From what I understand you need to remove not only the paint put the primer that the original paint ain't sticking to.

I recently repainted my truck. I did not replace the trim as I liked the look more with out it. I used a heat gun and a putty knife to remove that. As far as sanding went all of the clear coat got sanded off. Any of the rusty areas or questionable areas were taken dow to bare metal with either the sander or the miniblaster. I did have a cople of bad spots on the cad corners that were patched up with fiberglass.
