Boiling hot drive train

I pull large 5th wheel. Noticed rear end got hot enough to peel the paint of the rear differential cover. Been looking at aftermarket larger capacity differential covers. Wondering if others have simular problem, and looking for possible solutions

Sounds like an aluminum cover with fins is in order, and syn. lube.

There has been a lot of discussion about peeling paint on the 3G differentials. It is a common occurrence and the general feeling is that it is due to crappy paint application, not over heating.



It is a good excuse to get a nice looking cover with a drain plug!



I believe DC already uses synthetic lube in the differentials.

The paint is terrible on the aam11. 5. But man do those Mag hytec covers look GOOD.

Like said above, get yourself a Mag Hytec cover then put a temp gauge in it. You'll be able to see just how hot the diff. is getting.

I like the idea of a new differential cover, also considering installing temp sensor. . Does anyone know what temp is considered to hot for the rear differential

For my second genner---I don't know what is to hot,but my rear Mag-hytec with the sensor runs 140/160 empty-highway and around 180/200 with a good load(trailer). You kind of learn what is normal for your vehicle and if for some reason it was any higher i would be concerned and watch the guage or pull over. My ride has 3 autometer oil temp guages mounted on the dash for engine/6speed/rear diff. Overkill ---yes, but it gives me peice of mind and on long trips,i kind of like to watch/track the different readings depending on road conditions/load.

At least on my KW, the diff temps are rarely over 160*, even pulling a load on 10% grades in the summer.

My 06 dually lost its paint and I took it by the dealer and they said it was not a problem.

I have the D80 and concure with DWeiler observations. I have a Mag-Hytec and a temp gauge. You want the readings to be inthe middle of the gauge range. I think mine is 50 - 300 ish.

cool, never seen that one. nice price compared to the mag hytec alternative. Some hi temp black paint and a sander and it can be made to look like a mag hytec without much effort...

This is the PML cover I put on my truck and it looks great. A lot easier to service the differential fluid now too.

PML offers the cover powder coated black and polished. I like the look of black more so, but cetain those say it holds heat. To Each There Own.
