Well got my new 3 pilar mount Di Pricol white faced gauges installed. The Di Pricols are much nicer than the Banks dynofact gauge set that I have in my 1st gen. I also got a westech fuel pressure gauge, not as nice a the Di Pricols, but it will do.

So now I need to get a wish list together and start bombing. I intend to go 4" exhaust, but for now , the muffler just kinda fell off ;) . So what are the best bombing mods for my 24V 2001 3500 4X4 ? Of course I want power, but I need better fuel mileage, I am use to 19 to 27mpg in my 1st gen crew cab, and the 14. 5mpg that I get now sucks diesel  .

1st what order should in install the mods(like most people cash is tight, so I am doing an upgrade as funds allow)

2nd, What turbo should I use ? (Hey Piers you out there ?)

3rd what injectors ? I am thinking the 275 hp flavor

4th what box to add, I want some control and multible settings from mild to wild, but also needs to get great fuel mileage.

5th any other suggestions would be great.

I am also thinking of entering this truck in the Cannonball(when its completed ) It would be super cool if a diesel placed in the top 10:D

Kyle

#1 Probably Air(AFE/Scotty/BHAF), Exhaust, Injectors, then a box is gonna end up being your order probably.

#2 Can't help ya sorry :(

#3 I think the 275's would probably be better mileage wise (wish they made 'em for 12 Valve's instead of 370's!)

#4 In my opinion the most adjustable box out there is the TST Power Max 3.

#5 stacks, STACKS, did I mention STACKS :-laf

The order I have followed:

1) 275 injectors

2) TST powermax 3 (10 power levels with egt, boost and trans temp)

3) BHAF

4) Transmission and TC

5) Piers HX40 and 4" exhaust

What next? :D

Oh I forgot-you will have to change wheels and tires out. Stock tires were lasting 2500 miles on the rear after installing the TST unit. I used some 5 spoke alum wheels with Pirelli Scorpion 285-65-16. They stick like glue and are the same diameter as the stock tires. Street driving only.

1st get an Edge EZ or Van Aaken box, next big air filter.

Then Clutch to hold the power South Bend or Mitchell.

Your stock HX35 should hold you over for a while, it is a tough turbo!, then I would advise a Piers 40 w/16 housing.

I would normally advise 275's but since you have one of those big duallys that weighs 10 million pounds, your going to need something to get it rolling quick. I would go straight to an ATS20%, DD3, or BD2 something in the 100 hp area.

Big fueling boxes, There is the Powermax3, Edge Comp, and Blue chip FMS.

I would get the EZ first if you plan on not going with the Comp (it has the EZ built in for timing), if you go PM3 you can run the EZ with it to advance your fueling timing electronically, same goes for the Blue chip FMS.

Justin that all looks cool, but I am just coming up from a 1st gen and some of the terms went right over my head.

1st, injectors you listed a bunch of letters, I don't have a clue

what it means.

2nd How many boxes do I need to install ? what do they do and

doesn't one do the job ?

Keep in mind, I am not out to drag race, I just want towing power and great fuel mileage. At this time this 01 is a dog compared to my 1st gen crew cab which will light up the tires in 4th gear, just by flooring it :D  :D and still get 19mpg to 27mpg.

So please bare with this backwards 1st gener, and fill in the blanks.

Kyle

The Piers HX40 can be ordered with a 16 cm exhaust/turbine housing or an 18. 5 cm turbine housing, I would advise the 16 for the faster spool up time and responsiveness.

On the Fueling boxes, for the most part Edge, TST, and Blue Chip

do about the same thing for fueling, and do more if you go with a custom box (like TST Competition, or Edge Drag racing Box)

But, the TST box offers no timing enhancement via the VP44's control module, nor does the Blue Chip FMS.

The Edge Comp has this timing built in.

But, if you like the customizing features that the TSTPM3 and the FMS provide, you can piggyback (install both boxes).

Run an Edge EZ with the FMS or PM3 to get your fuel timing advancement electronically, this makes a difference to be noticed (ask Banshee or DarrellB both are piggybackers!)

Bye the way the Timing will help with EGT's and Fuel mileage.

Kyle,

Good news and bad news...

Good news first... you can BOMB away on a 24 Valve and get some pretty awesome power and have a fun-to-drive machine.

Bad news... you probably won't get the mileage that a 12 Valve gets, especially the 27 mpg figure. I dunno why, but that's just how these 24 valve engines work.

Here's what I would do if I had it to do again:

Gauges, at LEAST an EGT and Fuel Pressure

Intake, either a BHAF from Napa, AFE, Scotty II, or something equivalent.

Computer, either an Edge Comp, TST, VA, whatever your budget permits. The Edge for sure is a boost fooler, fueling, and timing box, so you won't need multiple boxes with it... I'm not sure on the others.

Driveline upgrades, either auto transmission upgrade or SBC or equivalent clutch for the manual transmission.

Here's what I did, and I did it wrong...

Bought an Edge Comp and installed it. It rocks.

Bought gauges, but haven't installed them yet. Wishing every day that I had or could... I'll get them in there.

Bought a BHAF and a Mallory Mount and put it on, but then later read and heard that the flow rates and resulting lower EGT's were better on the Scotty II (according to some) so I bought one of those and installed it.

'Course, now I need a clutch, or will in the not-too-distant future because this Comp is too much fun.

I went with gauges, then injectorsDD1s (60 hp) K&N air filter. With this I went from 14. 5mpg-16. 5mpg. I then added DTT torque convertor, valve body, other transmission parts. Now before I can do more I need to go to a 4" exhaust and new turbo to handle the higher Exhaust gas temps. 1400 degrees now at Wide open throttle. Then I will put on a Edge comp box to hopefully gain some more mpgs. My $0. 02

OK, can someone explain how the various boxes work. I understand there are boxes for timing and then boxes for fueling and then the Edge comp which is a combo. How do you determine which box best suits your needs?? I have a 2002 HO, so which would be better, a timing or fueling box or both? What is the difference between an EZ and VA, Don't they work a little different but basically achieve the same end results?? What is the difference say between an Edge Comp and a stacked system of an EZ or VA with the PM# or Blue Chip box??

All these boxes are a little confusing  . I read awhile back the HO engine respond better to injectors, so I was planning on getting either DD2 or DD3. So which box or box combo would best compliment these injectors on an 2002 HO? And which boxes have the built in "boost fooler" needed when going with larger injectors?

VA, EZ = Timing/minor fueling

TST, FMS = BIG Fuel

Comp = both

I think it was JR2 that posted a chart with this info in the 1st time owners forum not too long ago.

andrew

Timing boxes = adds about 60HP big boost in lower rpm

Fueling box = taps into injector pump wire to add additional fuel delivery. Adds about 60-70HP

Injectors = adds 50-100HP depending on size.

I have the bluechip fueling box and a VA timing box together. Works great but If I had to do it again i would go for the EDGE Comp. Its all in one. Good luck!

Kevin

From what I've seen the timing boxes are closer to a 40hp increase and the fueling boxes are closer to 100+ hp. TST claims 120hp increase to the ground with a Powermax2 or 3. There is a HUGE difference in the fueling level between a plug in (timing) box versus a pump wire (fueling) box.

I stand partly corrected

Timing box is about 40Hp - 48 rear wheel. VA claims 60 hp increase, that may be a stretch!

Blue chip blue box should be about 80 rear wheel increase on 50% Others may be a little higher. I think the FMS fuels up to 63%;)

OK, now I am more confused, but whats new ?

For those of us, (mostly me) that are 2nd gen dummies. what box does it all ?

Kyle

The Edge Comp does it all, and is the only one that does it all.

Go with the Edge Comp, they are the best box for the buck,by far. The other major fueling boxes will not advance timeing therefore will not give you the MPG gain your looking for,if you piggyback an EZ,you just spent almost double what a Comp costs. The 5 sublevel low speed fueling on the comp is great, you can adjust your lower power levels so you have litterally no smoke. On the injectors,if you can afford them,go with DD2's now, they can be had for about 100 more than 275's and give 40 more hp,with no mpg,and about the same smoke levels. With a PDRhx40,the dd2's and comp will give you about 400RWHP,the truck will flat out fly, driveabilty will be great, and mpg will be same or better than stock if you drive it easy. You will need to move the factory lift pump rearward,or install a pusher, and banjo's at the 40hp level, since fuel pressure will be hovering at zero WOT,with a strong lift pump.
