Happy BFC Day!

It's a Wonderful Life...

Is it worth it? Any suggestions? They are scraping ten '96 models at work. Can I steal parts from one to add the another such as having double memory and dual hard drives?

Bombing Puters

Well, if they are from the same vintage year... . :D You should be able to add ram and hard drives as you wish.

On the ram part if they were bought full with lots of ram then you might have a problem there. If not, you will prolly have to work in pairs. Seems Digital puters liked their own hardware in their own puters.

The hard drives can be stacked as you like. You should see if they have primary and secondary controllers for the hard drives, cd's and other IDE hardware. I really cant remember if they used IDE standards back in 96'. If they did, more power to you.

Bill,

You might run into a problem with CPU speed in a computer that old. The main board might not support enuff memory. As Barry pointed out you can put a lot of hard drives in there. IDE was supported in '96 but who knows what Digital used.

Bombing Old Stuff

Bill,

I do not know your computer knowledge, but it can still be worth an upgrade. You can still use the case and power supply and build one he!! of a computer. A decent AMD compatable Mother Board should cost no more than $70. A 1. 8 GHZ AMD XP Processor should cost about $150. Get a decent sound PCI sound card, ie: Sound Blaster 32 meg mem, and a decent Video Card, ie: nVidia DDR with 128 Meg vRam. Get a decent sized Segate or Western Digital Hard Drive, ie: 50 Gig. For a couple hundred bucks you can build an increadablely fast machine out of that old Digital case. It is not very hard. Things will only go together one way. :rolleyes: If you have any questions about this feel free to e-mail me. :-{}

AMEN to that, RGilbert! My computer is kind of like Johnny Case's Cadillac it's been upgraded so many times. It's about time for another main board in this old Caddy.

That could be a AT style case, and none of the new mother boards will work with it. Its easy to check to see if it is. A AT case has the ports like printer and mouse in the same expansion slots as the modem or vid card. A ATX (the new ones) will have the keyboard, mouse, printer, serial ports all piled next to one another at the top of the case. On a At case the keyboard plug will be all by its self. If you pull the case open its easy to tell. A ATX board is taller than it is long, and a AT is longer than it is tall. If it is square, its a bAT board, which is a small AT board.

old cpu

I'm not sure it's worth fooling with. My son just bought new Gateway,no monitor or speakers, cost $400. Can't buy many parts for that!!! jps
