Tekonsha Prodigy - anyone have one?

Not so cool!

Since I tow for a living, and the fuel cost is all mine, I am looking for the maximum MPG while maintaning Maximum reliablity.

I have a 2001 3500, HO, 6 speed, 4. 10's.

I am not looking for any more HP, just better MPG. Here is what I am looking at doing, 4" exhaust, Edge EZ and a Taylor Wing.

I have tried the vortex intake thingy with little or no help.

What suggestions can you make?

What exhaust do you suggest.

Is there a better box than the Edge EZ for MPG while towing?

Is there something that I have missed or that you can suggest for better MPG.

Also, what gauges do I want?

Thanks so much.

The normal little things that come to mind: all of those things that take constant watching, keep tire pressures up(extra tire cost but maybe not as much as fuel savings), speed/rpm at which you tow, easy starts and stops, don't idle any longer than it takes to cool down. The DD box has timing only, aerodynamics work all the time above 35/40mph, Synthetics save on fuel mileage, no tailgate or one with a BIG u in the middle of it. A lot of little things add up.

Take a look at the PS2000 propane injection system - it's fairly common to hear 2-3 mpg improvements with that system, PLUS the additional benefit of serious power increase if you choose to use it...

MPG!

I have a 2001 6 speed with the 3:54 rear. I installed the Cummins 275 injectors and a EZ box. The mpg has gone up between 1 and 1. 5 mpg. EGT have gone down 150 to 200 degrees and there is more usable power. I ALWAYS tow with this truck so I cannot tell you mpg figures empty. I carry a Alpinlite truck camper and about 9000# of cargo trailer behind for a combined weight of around 20. 000#. I am very happy with the results. :)

OK. . I just seen something about adding the 275 injectors and the fuel mileage going up. Would this work with the 12 valve motors? This is the way that I want to go as far as the mileage while town even for that matter running empty. I currently get 21-22 mpg empty and 14-16 pulling or 25' 5th wheel. Now if I could increase that by a mile or so that would be great After a while the increase in mileage would pay for the injectors and the cost for refreshments for my buddies to help install them,,hint,,hint. .

Yup! Unlike gassers who's mileage drops as you ask for more power, our diesels get better! Think of it like this: If you are going down the road at 15,000lbs, which engine works less hard - 200hp or 300hp? You end up using less percent of the engine's capacity. Thusly, to go 70mph down the road you use less pedal. Cool, eh? There is a catch... this is a bell curve deal. In other words, you reach a point of mileage falling off after X-amount of power. This is volumetric efficiency limit. For better mileage, let your exhaust breath, get a BHAF, and a fuel plate of about 250hp. You should see an increase of around 3mpg. (actual mileage may vary). Have fu

Along with the power increases you may want to look into different gears or an auxilary overdrive for better economy.

Wing

Bob,

You've got to let us know how the wing works out. I haven't talked to anyone yet that didn't see a gain! I used a wing on the travel trailer. It was about 2' tall & helped me 1. 5mpg. It's too small for the 5th wheel though.

don't expect too much of a gain.

We (the NW BOMBers) have installed loads of different kinds of injectors. The only type that have consistant reports of mileage increase is the 275 RV injectors, but the gain is only 1 to 1. 5 mpg.

Pulling those heavy loads you may benefit from the EGT drop that the EZ provides, but I really haven't seen any reports of great mileage increases either... but any EGT drop is worthwhile.

MPGS

I had installed the 275s when the truck was new so I did not have a baseline for mpg. I noticed the better mpgs when I installed the EZ box.
