2nd Gen Non-Engine/Transmission Help with problem?

I am getting ready to undertake some of my first engine performance upgrades and need a little help/advice.

I have a 2002, 4x4, QC, HO, 6spd. Other than an AFE megacannon air intake and T-REX suspension, my truck is basically stock.

This truck is my weekend toy and family camping vehicle, so I am looking for some subtle upgrades that, ideally, won't give me much more noise or smoke, and most importantly, will retain its reliability while possibly increasing mileage. Also, Is there a way to do this without voiding warranty?

I am thinking about adding some injectors (I've heard a lot of good things about EDM's, so I am thinking about either the MACH 1, or 1. 5), FASS, and gauges first.

Any input or advice would be great!

thanks

The Perfect setup for 2002 HO

Marek,

See my signature and Reader's Pics for the perfect set up. I have the same truck as you have ... pulling a 38' 5th wheel.

BigBlue can pull the trailer like a choochoo train and turn heads just by pulling up to a stop ... . not too loud, not too wild but it is clearly more powerful then most ... without compromising CTD reliability.

Send me a PM if you want details on anything, we installed.

Whatever you do ... do you research first, install gages second ..... and most of all have fun!

Good luck,

Csaba

You will definitely want to get your gauges in there first. For the 24-valve you are going to want a FP and Pyro for sure. Most of us also have a boost gauge included in our set up. Doing the gauges first will give you a good baseline for your future mods.

You can't go wrong with the air in air out theory. So probably a good next step would be an aftermarket exhaust. A good 4" system would be plenty large for your future plans. It will not necessarily give you a great performance increase, but it will help reduce your EGT's to help keep your truck within a safe operating temperature.

Many people have been running injectors only with good results. With any injector larger than a BOSCH 275 you are going to need to incorporate a boost fooler of some type to keep the truck from setting an over-boost code. The nice thing about doing just injectors is that they add their power in a smooth manner. In general, they should be much friendlier to your stock clutch than a box designed for the same hp increase. Boxes usually bring on the power much quicker in the rpm range which in some cases can be taxing on that stocker.

As far as the fuel system goes... there are lots of aftermarket fixes for the LP situation. Any of them have their merit. You are going to have to find which best meets your needs.

Any time you start BOMBING, you run the risk of warranty issues. I think that you will be fine with the gauges and exhaust. The injectors and fuel system upgrades may be a little more sticky. It really will all depend on your dealer. Some will "overlook" more than others.

BTW... I have some family that lives just outside of your area. I've been there many times. It is certainly a beautiful place.

You've probably seen this on the TDR... . "I am my own warranty station".

Depending on the dealer, your T-REX alone might kill your warranty, already. When they see it they'll look for other stuff.

Add injectors and a FASS, and it's toast, for sure.

Get your guages installed and bomb the hell out of it. These trucks are way too much better and fun bombed to wait 3-5 yrs. for the warranty to expire. In theory, my warranty was gone with 2K on the clock, and I've had 92K miles of smiles with no regrets.

Gauges (pyro & boost) are very important for monitoring engine performance for mild to wlid hp mods. Be sure to install pyro sensor in exuast manifold not after turbo. I would stick to a 40 to 80 hp injector along with an ez or a comp box. Gutted stock exaust or perferably 4" to remove the heat. Run a turbo tricker( delays waste gate opening) - set to a maximum 35 PSI for stock hx35 turbo any higher boost will be over spinning turbo( may reduce life expectancy). Install a push pump close to tank to maintain consistant fuel to injection pump( idle 20 psi / wot > 9 psi). Good luck.
