Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Bombing muffler in place

Anyone ever take a 3. 5 or 3. 75 hole saw on an extention and drill out the buffles in the stock muffler starting at the 4in inlet end? I know people do this to CANs on snowmobiles.

I like the idea, since the dealer alluded to the fact I "might" lose warranty for straight piping or even a performance muffler.

Could/Would some look in the front 4 inch hole of a removed muffler and see if the first baffle is flat and looks like it could be drilled out with a round hole saw? And if someone is really bored, they could lay one open like a pig ready for the BBQ, and post a picture. SNOKING

He cant its against he law for him to do that. Tell him to "stick it". And go to a different dealer.

weird muffler

Snowking, I just pulled my muffler out of the junk pile and it doesn't look like your plan will do much. From the inlet side, a pipe runs to the back of the muffler to a small chamber. The pipe is full of small holes like a spagetti stainer. Looking in from the outlet, it too has a pipe that runs to the front of the muffler and stops about two inches from the front wall of the muffler. This pipe is also full of holes that look to be 1/8" in size. The inlet is at the top of the muffler and the outlet is at the bottom of it, there aren't any baffles to drill through. The exhaust has to through a strainer when going in and through another to get out. This looks to be very restrictive muffler. It can't be saved, it's terminal!

Thanks for taking the time to look. Oh well, step son is going to be a Flowmaster Dealer next week. Well have to have him get me a 4" muffle and tail pipe. SNOKING

Just cut the muffler off and put it in the scrap heap. This was probably the single best modification that I have done.



The EGT now runs, on average, 150 degrees cooler. I picked up about . 3 o . 5 MPG on fuel economy and I love the way it sounds. I got all of this for $60.



No muffler is better in my opinion. Oh yea, I forgot to mention that the e-brake sounds better, too.

I agree cut the thing off. I think it sounds very cool and yes it does lower your egt's. Some people get ****** at me for how loud my truck is. ... ..... But guess what... ... ... ... ... ..... WHO CARES WHAT OTHERS THINK Oo.

lemme just note that i have put some ugly holes through my stock muffler when i was using it (before getting a performance muffler). there are two tubes running through it--one for the 4" side and one for the 3" side (i don't think that the mufflers changed for the 24v's?). there are holes around the sides in some spots and the ends of the tubes are open. there's a lot of restriction for a turbo and the hole punch through made it sound too raspy. now, opening it up and placing a piece of pipe through it would be better...

I ran a hole saw on a long extension thru my old one. It didn't seem to change anything but that was before guages.



It's funny how it happened. I went straight piped for a couple years and wanted to save the muffler in case of an excessive noise citation, grumpy neighbor, etc. So off to my little junk pile at the edge of the woods it went. (acually into the back of my old Ford f250--center of the junk pile )



I decided to put it back on when we moved to our present home. (wooded subdivision on a hill) I knew it would be too noisy and generate complaints. When I got it out of the pile, it had something rattling inside. A bunch of nutshells came out. I couln't get them all so I drilled thru the baffles. Got enough rattle without hickory nuts in my muffler.
