I found a thread on irv2.com about changing the thermostat in an RV from the cheap POS analog type to a digital type.

After reading it, I went to Wally World and bought the Hunter digital thermostat and installed it in the 5er this afternoon. I wasn't able to test the A/C because I don't have AC power in the RV storage lot, but the furnace part worked well. When I got home I wrote up some instructions and posted them on my website. The instructions are specific to the Coleman Mach thermostat, but might also help if you have a different type (i. e. Dometic?).

So Ken, are you hoping for better temp control or was yours going bad? Mine doesn't seem to be terribly accurate but it works, and hey we are camping , right? Are you a snow bird and live in your unit? One more question, I see you have solar panels. Those interest me. Can you give me some brief info on your install. Do they work good? Thanks

I changed the t-stat becasue it's a POS. No temperature readout, and the dead zone is way too wide, causing the temperature to vary too much. It was a cheap mod and I think it'll work well. I have reworked the article to include credits and more details to the original inventers of the idea.

Solar Panels on RV:

Since you asked, I decided to make a web page for RV Solar Electric System. Here it is: http://www.danburypark.org/klenger/arctic-fox/solar/index.html

If you have any more questions, email me at -- email address removed --.

Good luck

Ken,

Your instructions look great. I've got the Coleman Mach thermostat in my Nash and my wife has been complaining about the wide range between off and on. Without really thinking about it I assumed the furnace was intended to work that way for better efficiency. Plan to see if I can find one of the Hunter Digital units this week.
