Bombing?

Thanks, TDR Staff

Name This CTD

ULSD=less smoke?

I'm new to diesel, but why is modifying a truck referred to as "bombing" it. I hope it isn't a reference to the reliability of modified motors.

I guess I'll stay SABB (Stock And Boring, Baby), because of my new truck payment: BOMB (Because i'm Out of Money, Baby).

That did factor in to my decision. I drive about 45k miles a year, so the time I have a warranty is relatively small. I will take advantage of it for the 2 years and 3 months that i actually have the 100k mile Cummins warranty.

Wow - 45k a year and you are "new" to diesel! :p

Welcome to the "Dark Side" (darkness due to SMOKE! :-laf )

I think you will like it here...

Also - keep in mind that alot depends on your dealer - some will not even blink if you do minor mods (exhaust/air filter or intake/tires/etc)...

So keep in mind - BOMBing does not only have to do with performance - it can be anything you do to your truck to make it "uniquely yours. "

Update your signature with info about your truck too, so we know what you have in case you have technical questions...

And - most of all - Welcome to the TDR!!! Oo.

Dark Side?

I race BMWs. As a result, we have always called Porsche the Dark Side.

The first "big trip" for the tuck was hauling a two car trailer with my and a friends car to the Targa Newfoundland race in Newfoundland.

I have to guess the trailer was 10k lbs, we had 2k lbs of cargo, and three adults. We got about 12 MPG averaging 75 to 85 MPH on the highway. I was hoping for a little better milage, but we travelled at a pretty good clip. Round trip it was over 5k miles.

I've had my truck for a couple of years now, but I'm new here to TDR (about time, I know). I've also finally gotten a little more financially stable. I'm looking to modify a little bit, but I'm not sure which direction to go. I've got a straight pipe already, new tires, spray in bedliner, etc. , but I'm looking towards more performance related items (i. e. box, chip, etc. ). Anyone running the SP Diesel boxes? How about bully dog? Edge? What guages are the most important to get? Thanks in advance for the help!

Hi!

Intake mods will probably be necessary to help keep things cool(er)... Gauges - the most important of ALL is the EGT (exhaust gas temp) gauge - this will be the key to not having a "meltdown" with your motor, esp. if you are heading towards fueling enhancements. Best box I have heard of and seen (for a 1 box enhancement is the SMARTY CR from madselectronics.com).

Since you have a 3rd Gen truck, I would stay away from "pressure" types of boxes as they tend to be hard on the injectors. You may want to look into SMARTY CR (uses ECM reprogramming to enhance power and reduce torque mgmt), TST (timing/duration box - new ones offer some pressure too but not required), Edge Juice (timing/duration), VanAaken (duration), or maybe even just getting your injectors done (Ross @ Dynomite Diesel Performance). Injectors (50hp or 90hp) give a very linear, non-peaky type of power that has a great feel to it and don't cause too much EGT increase.

TST, Edge Juice and several others have combos of box+gauges. I run an X-Monitor digital gauge that tells me EGTs, Trans Temp, and Turbo boost on 1 small unit... very nice!

Search these forums - you will find out that there is a TON of info on these topics that will help you make an informed choice.

Good luck!

With those 3. 73s and the G-56 trans, you are turning some RPMs at the speeds you were traveling! 12 Sounds pretty good. You also will find out that as the truck breaks in, mileage will go up some. Also, consider a timing sensor from Rokktech (www.rokktech.com). May give you a "little" more mpg, and won't void your warranty.

A SMARTY CR (www.madselectronics.com) would probably help your mileage too, and is supposedly "un-detectable" when the stock software is re-loaded to the truck. But - only you can make that decision...

BMWs - awesome! I had a 535i - Great Car! Porsches - the Dark Side - now that is funny!

Gears

Yea, I never checked the gear ratios before ordering the truck. I test drove an auto. I figure the six speed manual would have a taller final drive when compared to the four speed auto. Wrong.

Knowing that probably would not have changed my transmission choice though. I never learned how to drive an automatic.

I would like to have 3. 53 or an electric overdrive to run a couple hundred RPMs lower on the highway. I will go looking for options after my warranty is up.

I did once, in my '89 Jeep Cherokee, my first truck, an '86 F-250 had a 4-speed, my '99 Dodge a 5-speed, my '93 Audi S4 a 5-speed, and now my bike a 5-speed and my '06 Dodge a 6-speed.

I don't mind rowing!
