So on the way to Sioux falls last night with the cruise set at 70mph enjoying the new DDP4s and watching for smoke that seems to be non-existant, I hear and feel a boom and watch the tach go to 3k. Crap. Lost 5th gear. Wasnt even hard on it... . Oh well. Taking the back cover off and see what I broke tonite. :{

Exact same thing happened to a friend of mine last week. He took the back cover off and put the nut back on with some loctite and peened the nut so it couldnt turn off. All was fixed in a few hours and everythings going good for him.

Got it apart and the nut just backed off. Got a new nut and going to tighten the crap out of it tonite and get it up and going again. Thankful thats all it was.

Wildmanben,

New to this game, could you please explain about the nut, where it is, and what function does it have?

Info like this is very valuable!Thanks,

RALee

hey Ben, didn't you just crank down the old nut a little while ago? Wonder why it came loose? Which nut are you going to get as a replacement? I'm having this done very soon and am curious to know what you are using...

ralee, if you do a search on "5th gear nut" or "NV4500 problems / issues" you'll find a lot of information out there... welcome to tdr too!

Well got it going tonite. The only thing that I could think of is that I didnt get the nut tight enough last time. Should have left well enough alone. I used the the big dog Snap On air hammer to tighten it up. Spec is 280ft/lbs. I think I got it close. Used a bunch of the Loctite Red and peened the nut too. That baby aint coming off again. Also put on a set of FastCoolers too. Pretty sweet looking.

The nut that came off had two set screws in it. The new nut is a pinch type. I think it will hold better. At least I hope so.

I lost mine at under 100k, forgot exact figure. I got the nut with the two set screws and also got the nut wrench and spline socket for the install. I installed it with lots of red loctite in the splines under the gear and of course the nut. I tightened it with a long cheater until my 3/4" to 1/2" adapter snapped off so according to the adapter specs I had it tighter then what was called for. I also staked the nut in about ten places all around real good. I ran it this way until I upgraded to the 5600 at which point I tore the 4500 apart to check on the stuff and I had a terrible time getting that nut off. The gear was also stuck on there real good.
