I must be a little slow, after a year of being here I still don't know what a boost elbow is or what it does. I have a boost module and a turnbuckle on turbo. Do I need a boost elbow..... Go easy on me:confused:

I know for a fact that when I bought the PE EZ, I got an elbow that makes my boost go up to 29 lbs. I took the stocker off and put on PowerEdges boost elbow. You have to destroy:eek: the clamp that is on the OEM.

I dont use a turnbuckle to keep my wastegate closed. It seems to do a good job like it is. I am new to this game (HP) also, but I know what I got. It's enough for my drivetrain and maybe too much.

Hope this is enough info... somebody else will chime in, if this is not detail enough.

boost elbow

greg, the boost elbow swap is only for the ETH engine. you have the ETC. the ETC has a "hard line" between the compressor and the wastegate, and there is no elbow to change. you have done the same thing with the turnbuckle. the boost elbow is a constriction in the line to the wastegate to keep it closed to achieve higher boost.

ETH and ETC

greg, the ETH is the "high output" engine hooked up to the 6 speed manual. the ETC is the code for the smaller rated engine which is hooked to the automatic and the 5 speed manual transmission. the ETC is rated at 235 HP, and about 460 lb/ft of torque. i think the ETH is rated at about 20 more HP.

I have a '99 with auto trans, not H. O. , but had a soft line between the turbo and pnuematic control. Installed the boost elbow with good result.

Correction. Only the 2001 and newer automatic equipped trucks have the hardlined wastegate. All other years/models have brass elbows and a soft line.

line to the wastegate

you all are absolutely correct, and i'm  . the 2001 ETC was the first year with the "hardline". DUUUUHHHH!!!!!

The hard line is a result of using the HY35 turbo in the autos vice the HX35 which is used in the 5 and 6-speed manual trucks. I believe the HY35 spools a little quicker to make up for the stall requirements of the torque converter (or words to that effect). The HY35 and HX35 are easily swapped for one another. The only nondestructive :) mod for boost with the hardline (if my memory is accurate) is the turnbuckle method to keep the wastegate from opening or to restrict it's opening.

BigFun said it in a nutshell. However, if you end up with a HX35, use the boost elbow. I believe Piers modified HX35 spools up just as fast as the stock HY35. At least it seems that way to me, and that's with a 14cm exhaust housing.
