i understand the method of hooking up gauge to the 3/4 plug behind fuel filter but i have heard of another way by tapping the intake for better readings. anyone heard of this or know how to do this way? any help or pics would be great thanks

You can tap into the manifold or anywhere else from the turbo outlet to the head. I would always put the presure tap on the engine side of the intercooler core so any restriction in the core could be detected. All sources will give the same reading. The plug in the head is already there, so why not use it?

I have my boost gauge plumbed into the "Intake pipe" (if thats what you call it, basically the cast aluminum pipe that is bolted to the engines intake). I was going to use the 3/4 plug behind the fuel filter but i have heard from a few people, its not the best location since it is reading from a far point in the intake. Also, it can give "Pulsed" readings because it is too close to a cylinder. I just removed that intake pipe, drilled and tapped it and replaced the gasket (About $4. 00). I get steady readings, no fluctuations. Took about 30 minutes to do, real easy, and ALOT easier to get to then that plug, which by the way, you will need to use a special bushing to drop the size from 3/4 down to 1/8". I originally tried a regualr brass plumbing bushing but you cant tighten it due to the shape on the engine, can only get a few turns on.

You can find out there the entire instructions for the Banks kits. Which includes gauges and all the rest of the stuff. With lots of pics, etc. In there it talked about determining how your AFC gets its boost signal.

On my 97 I did this just a few weeks ago. It has two ports one in the front and one in the rear by the fuel filter. The one in the rear is where the AFC gets its boost signal. The one in the front is the test port.

Determine your setup. If you have one in front, nothing is blocking it, its easy to reach, etc. Could not be any easier. My gauge kit came with the adapter for the port. Just unscrewed the plug and inserted the gauge. Took a few minutes, no drilling.

Last tip was I put plastic tubing inside a about 2 feet of 1/4" rubber hose I got from NAPA. Did this under the hood from the engine out towards the firewall to protect tubing from vibration and heat where its get routed. Tip courtesy of illflem.
