Time for guages

Just installed my gauges, EGT, Boost, and transmission. Installed them on the worst blizzard of the year, outside. Had them all fall but not smart enough to do this when the sun is out and 60 degrees, NO,NO. Ordered the dipstick transmission style, a mistake will order the one for the pan in spring.

My question is on the boost. I have the 0-60 gauge so the 0-10 is not very wide, but it looks like most of the time under 1200 rpm the boost is sitting on 0. When I step on the fuel it does go up around 10. At cruising 2200 it reads around 3 or 4.

Is this Normal?

Milt

Yes, Milt, that is normal... Mine sits at about 1, no load, and goes to 4-6 cruising at 60-65. You only get the higher boost when you put your foot into it... . ;)

I think 10 at WOT is a little low. 95 Auto, stock, should be more like 18-20. My 97 stock was 18. 2200 rpms in OD, assuming 3. 54 gears is pushing 75-80. I figure more like 10 would be normal. 2-4 is normal for 55-60 where you are at very light throttle.

I vote for first checking the install, them boost leaks, then low power problems.

edit - guess I didnt pay attention to those gears in the sig, but I think your readings are low.

10 psi would be low for WOT. He just said he got 10 when he "steps on the fuel. " Mine goes to about 10 when I step on the gas and when the turbo fully kicks in, it goes momentarily to 18 (WOT). Unless you keep you foot all the way to the floor, under load, it will start to drop after that. At 18psi the wastgate kicks in and limits higher boost...

Thanks for the replies. I think we are running normal, what I ment by hitting the gas was just a normal acceleration to cruising speed, not flooring it. Thanks again.

Milt

EXCUSE ME (!!!!!!!), when you say, “…hit the gas…” do you mean, “…hit the diesel…”? :D :D Just poking fun.

My boost readings are the same as these other guys.

I first installed my boost gage at the turbo ("T" with wastegate). Then I moved it to the pump. I thought maybe at the pump would be more accurate. Fortunately, I had the same readings. :) Obviously, different readings would have suggested a problem between the turbo and intake.

I was not impressed with the factory line connection between the pump and intake. The nut bottoms out on the fitting to nut adapter  . Has anyone had problems with this connection? Did you notice the metered orifice in the adapter?

Installing the boost line in 1/8" port on the side of the manifold behind the injection pump is the best place, only problem is that it's a little tight working in there but is easily done with needle nose pliers if your fingers are too big. I use a 1/8" pipe thread X compression 90° adaptor to make it easier. NO Teflon tape.

Milt, you'd probably get better readings with a 30-40 psi gauge, 60 is too big, you will just be using the lower end of it most all the time.

With the 98. 5 and newer CTD there is a 3/4" plug just behind the fuel filter. Make sure you use the first one, as the second one is an access to the water jacket. You can get a 3/4" to 1/8" NPT reducer and mount your boost gauge fitting to it. Either that, or you can tap the intake manifold and mount it there... . ;)

For you guys with a 24v get Piers boost fitting adapter. Forget the drilling and tapping and all that. Remove a manifold bold. Installs Piers replacement manifold bolt with built in boost port, and connect your gauge.
