Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) 5 speed concerns??

I have been reading about others getting 20 - 28 psi boost pressure on their guages. I can only get 18 psi on mine. My truck only has a VA Box & Amsoil air filter for engine mods. Is this normal? Seems like everyone else who has about the same or less mods as I do are getting higher readings.

Any suggestions or imput?!

Thanks, Scott

Has your wastegate been elbowed or turn-buckled? Sounds to me like either your gauge is AFU or your wastegate is opening. A stock 99 should be able to make 20-22 psi or so and with the VA it should be more.

Do you have a boost elbow on the truck, if you don't have a boost elbow your wastegate is still kicking in at 20 psi. If you have an elbow and no fooler you will get overboost codes.

When my truck had just the old style VA box, w/o boost fooler, my boost remained the same until I put the elbow on, and a boost fooler to keep it from throwing codes. Once that was on I saw 28 easy. Of course now I peg the 35 psi boost gauge.

I do not have a elbow or fooler. Didn't know I needed one! Should the dealer who sold it to me have told me about this? I can still find him in the area if need be.

Hold on, first you need to find out if you have an old or new style Van Aaken box. The old ones do not have boost foolers built it and they are very square shaped. The newer style boxes have a boost fooler built in and they are round on the edges and have mount hole "wings" on the sides. If you have a new style one all you need is an $5 elbow. Put that in and you should see 26-28psi.

On the turbo is a cylindrical object hanging off the side. That is your wastegate actuator. If it is a HX-35 then there is a hose going to the front of it. The boost elbow goes into this line. This process is more in-depth with the newer auto trucks since they use a hardlined wastegate on the HY-35. But the concept is the same. Heard a . 22 shell works wells with the HY. :)

The boost elbow is the little pipe that connects the boost side of the turbo to the waste gate when you bleed of the pressure,or plug the pressure going to the waste gate, which stops it from opening, you end up with more drive pressure driving the turbines hense more boost. My sugesstion is to plumb in some fittings and valve in the cab so you can control the prssure to the wastegate,so you have the control and the ability to adjust boost. Merv

WOW!!!

Well, I went back down to the dealer where I purchased my VA Box and talked to him about the low Boost pressure. He put on a Boost Elbow and reprogramed my VA Box. WOW!!!

Want a difference! 24-25 psi on the gauge now and no more lag spot out of the hole. Amazing!! Can't waiting to pull the 5th wheel and try it out. Thanks for all of the info guys.

Once again TDR comes through!! :D :D
