How does the boost dump work and what is the best way to test it to make sure it is functioning properly?

Do you mean the boost wastegate? "boost dump"?

Give it a WOT and let off. You should hear a "wooosh" meaning the gate opened to release excess boost not needed. Could be wrong . . .

The wastegate opens to let excess exhaust gasses pass by the turbo during full WOT, not after you let off.

Good thing I said "could be wrong" . . . huh. So now that you've cleared things up for me is there something you can add for this fellow to know if his WG is functioning?

If the question was for the wastegate, it has to be working properly because if it was not opening the ECM would be setting the over boost code and possibily going into limp mode. A stock truck should make ~19psi at the manifold.

I was getting an overboost code on my truck so i took the hose loose on the manifold and used a rubber tip blower to check it. I used an inline regulator set at 35 psi and found that it was bad, air went straight thru. Bought the kit from my dealer $150 . Took about 30 min. to replace without removing turbo. Easy job.

This is a good way to inspect your turbo parts after you remove them from the intercooler. That sound would be a "bark".



You can apply a regulated air source to the wastegate actuator if its a manual trans. If you have an auto, it's hard plumbed in. It can be checked, but takes more time.



Why do you suspect that it is not working propoery?
