Hey guys if anyone knows i looked at the upper end of shaft where the rag joint is and do those bolts take a special socket or can they be backed out with a regular socket if so and what size either metric or standard i need to know, im trying to beat this snow storm and weather thats moving in... .

Sorry, I'm not sure what they look like. Do they have like 12 points to them or something. I just don't recall having any sort of issue with removal of them. Most likely metric, but I have been wrong in the past... ... ... ... .

GreenLeaf they are the 12point type bolt, i will try my metric and see what will fit since your saying you didn't have any trouble with them... thanks a bunch. . oh boy get the steering in and all i have left are those damn tag light (eyeball) covers to find. . I have a friend that has an uncle whom has a truck just like this that hopefully he will let me get those from him since the truck rolled off and ran into his house trailer some time back.

Thanks Roy,

I will be back im going to track down a punch to take out the pin with... im guessing you can knock it out from either side... will be back in a few and will check back on what you found out...

Thanks

They are 10mm twelve point. A ratchet wrench works great. Make sure you back up that shaft with something heavy like a hammer when you drive out the pin so you don't damage the seal in the steering gearbox.

well i have a 10mm but i don't have a twelve point socket... and i can't find those punches anywhere.

oh so i need to put somthing like a hammer or a block of wood on the back side of the shaft opposite from the way im punching the pin out of...

well 40min later i have in my possession one 10mm twelve point socket and one pin punch... :-laf and as i was leaving Oreilly's parking lot it was getting very grey with snow

Borgeson shaft

Okay guys after 3hrs i got the old shaft off the splines  talk about a bear. . now i have the top at the rag joint tight as per the instructions and well the splined end start on but i can't seem to coax it on the rest of the way. . any secrets to this, and i did grease the splines coming out of the steering gear box

well me being somewhat mechanically inclined, i didn't think there should be any tricks to how it goes off and on, but one never knows working on stuff nowadays... figured it would be smarter to ask then mess something up

IIRC, when I did my ol' 93 there is only one way the thing lines up at the box, double check and see if there is a sort of keyway that needs to be lined up... And you will see when all is said and done, this is probably the best thing you can do to a 1st gen.

You didn't say whether you trimmed any of the hollow portion of the shaft down...

The lower end should just fit over the splines and slide. Double check the set screw to make sure its not in the way.

I didn't get instructions with mine so you must be way ahead of me. I recommend putting loctite on everything too. (instructions may say that)

It sounds like you buggered up the shaft a bit getting to old one off :(

As stated make sure the set screw is backed out for starters. Then you may need to get a small file and recut/dress the spline teeth on the end to get the yoke to slide on.
