I ordered borgeson steering shaft today and was told that it has a set screw instead of a pin to hold it on steering box. Does this set screw always line up with hole that pin comes out of or do you have to grind flat spot on splines sometimes? Also, is the pin in the original shaft supposed to be made of plastic? Mine was.

Borgeson Shaft

The original shaft should be held in place with a roll pin,(I think the roll pin has a plastic piece inside of it) the pin does not go through the spline, the spline has a notch in it for the pin. The set screw does not line up, the instructions say to grind a flat on the spline for the screw tip to seat on. There is an easier way to make a seat for the set screw, instead of grinding, just put the shaft in place, make sure the steering wheel is centered and remove the set screw. Use a drill bit to spot the shaft through the tapped hole. Drill just until the whole point is cutting and then 1/32 deeper. Replace the set screw and tighten.

I just had my first infamous Borgeson "Roll Pin" experience yesterday while replacing the Steering Gear on my girlfriend's W250... . She did most of the work.

Wasn't much fun trying to get the RP to align once again. :( This Roll Pin didn't have any plastic inside of it.

KEENO's fun. :D

Hey rdodd!:)

Her truck came equipped w/ the Borgeson when we bought it 1 1/2 years ago. My truck has the Dodge OEM shaft and I've just been replacing the "coupler" every year for six bucks or so from my local Dodge Dealer.

When comparing the two trucks... The Borgeson really does make a significant difference.

Maybe next year... . KEENO:D

try this

i have the b shaft friends 93 has some 99-2000

shaft couplier on the end its 3x bigger than

the b shaft and cheaper

try dealer parts book 1 under 99-2000

years weld it to stock shaft

bill

Just a note of caution to anyone beating on the stock roll pin. Make sure to put a support behind the shaft when driving the roll pin out. If not, you will be spending $18 for a new stub shaft seal. Doh!!! I am changing the seal this weekend as I am getting tired of dumping power steering fluid in.

I do like how the truck drvies with eBorgeson shaft. Very nice.

Hey Everyone.

Ditto on the banging operation to get the roll pin out. I replaced the whole adjuster plug because I thought I damaged the bearing.

I did not grind any flat for my Borgeson shaft. The instructions say to grind one so as to make disassembly easier but it comes apart fine without doing so. The Borgeson set screw bites into the shaft and with the lock nut tightened it ain't goin' nowhere.
