Borgeson steering shaft

I have noticed a clunking feeling on steering wheel lately after hitting brakes or hitting bumps and steering seems a little looser. I thought i might try the borgeson steering shaft to see if it would help. Where do i get one and what is the cost? Are they hard to install on first gen. truck?

I got mine directly from the company. They ran around $189 when I got mine. The hardest part was getting the pressed pin out of the old one. Took a big hammer. I had my steering box go bad that made the wheel have a lot of play. If it is the steering shaft you can check by grabbing it at the steering box for movement.

My 92 4x4 developed a similar clunk and loose feeling when hitting bumps(especially on washboard roads). The coupling that connects the steering shaft to the steering box seemed loose. I found a repair kit at the Dodge dealer that restored steering to tight, near new feeling. The repair kit was inexpensive, approx. $6. 50. It took about 1/2 hour to R&R. It helps to use penetrating oil on the pin for a couple of days prior to removal.

There is now a rebuild kit available from Dodge for $4. 00 - P/N is 04443436AC. Also there is a revised rubber boot for the end of the coupler that does a better job of keeping water out - P/N 04740761.

Will this rebuild kit eliminate the need for the borgeson shaft completely or is the borgeson shaft a better fix?

The rebuild kit will restore steering to like new condition provided that the problem is in the steering shaft coupler and not something else. If you have really excessive play in the coupler, the body may be damaged(this part adds approx. $55. 00 to the project). I found that the original seal retainer worked better than the new one in the kit, so you might want to be careful when removing the retainer from the body. The part # on the MOPAR package is 1-04443436AC (package is dated 02/05/01). My truck had approx. 85K before I noticed a problem, so for the price, I picked up a couple of extra kits.

I originally bought the kit to fix the problem from Dodge at about $80 to include the new 'boot'. It worked... for about 8 months and then it started with a little play. I then bought the borgeson shaft. Lesson learned: Band-aid fixes cost more than fixing it right the first time. It isn't (at least in my case) the fact the dirt was getting into the end rather the design being poor in the first place. If you don't have the money for the shaft, get the pieces inside for a temporary fix. Don't waste money like I did.
