Help me pick out an Allison, please

5.9 Excursion?

Someone told me that the pump needs to be at TDC before I pull the pump. HOw do I find this and what's the easiest way to pull it out? I have the Bendix compressor thatI get to fight in the process. Where is the best place to get a pump fast? What is the difference between the IC pumps and the NON-IC pumps.

There is no TDC on the pump. They are most surely speaking of #1 Piston @ TDC compression. What I do is remove the oil fill on the timing cover. Remove the gear nut and CAREFULLY remove the lock washer. With a mirror you can locate the slot in the gear for the woodruff key. Bar the engine till that keyway is on top. Then lock the pump shaft (so you dont loose your timing) and continue as normal.

HSkinner,

I replaced my VP-44 last Sept. Mid-West Fuel Injection has great prices, the pump was at my door 3 days after ordering and you can talk to their technical staff if required.

Diesel performance parts and accessories. Diesel injectors, pumps, filters, kits, additive, gauges and apparel.

I made a puller by welding 2 pieces of 3/16" thick, 1. 5" X about 4" long stock together (needs to be stout). Then drilled out some oblong holes to slide the bolts through and into the cam gear tapped holes (8 X 1. 25 I think) Kind of like a steering wheel puller. (I can send you a photo if needed. ) When you tighten the bolts the center of the puller will push against the end of the pump shaft and eventually pop the gear off. It will make one heck of bang when it finally breaks free.

Another tip. When you go to put the new pump on, make sure to orient the new pump shaft just like the old one, I used an angle guage/scribe to get the exact orientation. Mark the keyway and a line down the shaft with a white or yellow paint pen. Really helps getting the key lined up with the notch in the gear.

There's a 5 part video series that a really smart guy made and walks you through the entire process. Should be able to find it on TDR or Google.

Plenty of other folks on here with more experience, but this helps. Good luck.

Cheers,

Gunny
