Happiness is owning two CTD's!!!

Just bought my wife a 98 12 valve QC SLT, hopefully she will quit driving mine :D

The dealer wants $1500-$2300 to stop a timing case cover leak and fix the dowel pin problem, otherwise a clean truck.

How big a problem is the KDP? Can it wait to be fixed?

The truck has Amsoil stickers in a couple of places and a Amsoil Air Filter / Oil Filter. This is good - right? Any problems switching to Premium Blue synthetic?

PS, wife wants more power

Sounds like it's too late for you to do the kdp fix, that's most likely what caused your oil leak if the repair estimate is that high. When the cracked case is replaced the new one won't let the dowel pin out again. Here's some pictures of the repair, http://www.flex.net/~triplem/new/dowelpin.htm My opinion is take it to Cummins, the dealer will charge you more than the estimate they gave you.

Mine had the gear case leak caused by a faulty gasket not KDP. So A Cummins shop repaired the leak by removing gear case and cost was $1200. 00. I than got JIG and killed KDP.

I have seen 2 NICE 98 12 valve's since I've begun browsing for a Club Cab I hope to get the first of next year. One was a Quad cab 4x4 the only downfall was it was an Auto. One was a BEAUTIFUL white Dually SLT power everything, 5spd, QUAD CAB:{ , 4x4, with ONLY 100,000 miles! :{ :{ $18,000 ($3K outta my range!!):(

I've known a couple guys who have had case to block leaks fixed for much cheaper at the dealer, like $300. They didn't remove the case but instead loosen everything and squirt silicone in the gap. Seems to work. Sounds as though Cummins did your repair the right way.

98-12v

Andrew, two autos to upgrade?? Keep in mind that 12v have great power potential, AND NO PUMP WIRE!!!!!Oo. :D

Ouch.

It is not actually leaking oil just has a big buildup of oily dirt on the cover.

If I did the silicon trick I would still need to remove the cover to fix the KDP right? What is the "jig" you refered to? Is there a way to fix the KDP without removing the cover?

Sorry I cant search it out but we have moved and dont have phone service yet (no 'net) and I have to borrow a phone line.

The truck has 119k miles (just a baby) so let the bombs fly!! Wife is thrilled with it exept she wants more power
