Bought a Banks Quick Spool 14cm tonight, did I waste my money?

My local diesel performance guy has been telling me to get it for a while, so I finally got it tonight. Now I'm having buyers remorse.



I mentioned to him that I get quite a bit of smoke when I shift when the Comp is on 5x5, with Mach 2's and a stock HX35/12cm.



I know that I could simply turn the box down, but it makes it no fun to drive it that way.



I just want the same power with less smoke and a bit quicker spool up. Am I headed in the right direction or am I just throwing money away.



The reason I'm kinda skeptical is because he also tried to sell me the Banks High Ram. I honestly can't see what that thing does performance-wise. Same size inlet and outlet as stock but with a big beer belly in the middle.



I'm not sold on that which got me wondering about my purchase of the Quick Spool.

You could have bought that holset housing from many different vendors,it is not a banks part... ... ... . only the big head. pun intended

No disrespect, but I'd be suspect of any "diesel performance guy" pushing Banks stuff real hard.



The Banks High Ram is, IMO, a bling item only. Your description is right on. Someone one the NW Bombers dyno'd the High Ram and said he lost ~3-5 hp.



What did your guy say it would do?

The 14w housing is a good upgrade for sure. Is it worth $375 or whatever banks sells it for, I'm not sure. I dont believe it will lower peak EGTs any but it should let the engine breathe a little better which should give you a little more useable power before you run into EGT problems. It should lower drive pressure too. Its just a spendy unit whoever you get it from. The high ram is just for looks. As far as spool, it doesnt spool any faster than a 12Whousing, but I cant say it spools any slower.

It was $530. 00 with the big head actuator. I never had problems with EGT even on 5x5, it just was a little laggy and hazed the intersection when I took off.



I was hoping to get rid of the the smoke and still keep it on 5x5 because when I lower the smoke level it makes it very slow to respond on every shift. Even when I have my foot to the floor on a long grade the EGT's are only at 1200 pre turbo, but I can see a lot of smoke in the side view mirror.



He said the High Ram would compliment the Quick Spool nicely, thats when I thought he was full of it.



He is a decent guy and he said I could return it if I don't like it, I'm just hoping that I don't have to play the " I told you to get the High Ram too" game with me... ... ... Jim

Well things have sure changed lol. Back when I was running a comp and dd2's I could peg out my pyro with ease with a PDR35/12.



Anyway the banks 14w housing wont spool any faster than the 12w, it should spool ever so little slower because it is bigger, but I couldnt tell a difference. Saying that it probably wont clean up lowboost smoke anymore than the 12. Since it flows a little more air it may clean up WOT smoke a little.

Been there done that Jim. I bought one too. Great article in a past TDR magazine about backpressure, sure made sense. Then I read more before I put it on. Bottom line, I sold it & bought a stock HX40-16.

Thanks Jeff, I bought most of my performance stuff from Ken about 4 years ago. I was very happy with the products he sold me and his knowledge.



I just don't have the time to drive there and talk to him face to face anymore and he's usually to busy to talk to over the phone. Hey, when you're good everyone wants you, I understand.



I'll probably end up returning this Quick Spool and making the effort to see him again... ... . Jim

Those turbos spool a little slower because of the larger housing, but once up and running they will spool faster in the mid and upper range, and drop EGT's at the same time. These are just a HX35 with the Holset 14 cm wastegated housing that have been rebalanced. Of course don't forget the Big Head it must be worth at least . 00001 HP. I have replaced several of these with Piers 35's and they are a world of difference over the Banks turbo.
