Was not intending to buy one, but some circumstances came up...... Anyhow, found out (have not been on the board for a while) that AAM has a 12" rear axle and no finned cover etc. How are these axles working out so far?

Just read the post about bad fuel injector pumps....Hope I don't get that bug....

Good luck nice truck, yeah run it like a truck and keep up on the stuff you have control over and enjoy the ride.

The IP stuff sounds like FCA is working on the issues as much as they can. Its pretty new info that its unclear when new trucks will have the revised IP. (Maybe will be called a CP4.3? in 2021, who knows, did not even see a name for the new IP yet. My guess is they are all the CP4.2)

Towing heavy some folks short cycle the factory fill on Diff's and follow the severe duty schedule as needed depending on how you use it. Don't know of any exact issues with the factory fill lube oils. I personally would just follow the schedule for my use.

Enjoy your truck.

AAM 12" is just an upgrade of the previously 11.5/8. Should be the same reliable as them.

Only dowgrade was that they took away the factory torsen diff and now run a conventional clutch type LSD.

CP 4.2 problem will exist until the engineering catches up to the problem. All you can do is be mindful of fuel quality and use an additive package.

As problematic as the Torsen diffs were a clutch pack posi is an upgrade. Little harder on tires but more consistent.

Downside is million mile umbilical to dealer for service unless you want to become your own warranty station.

Problematic torsen diffs?
I don't read a lot about this.
I remember that in the early days of the design they had some split cases, but lately?
Can't remember.

15-17 years ago it was the hot topic, everyone just learned how to drive them and their limits so it isn't a big topic anymore. They are picky about operation and lubricant, some worked decent and some not at all, easy to over run the TQ bias, use the wrong fluid and it glazed the brake shoes in them and they were even worse.

The clutch pack posi's are more consistent and forgiving for driving habits. You can easily rebuild the clutch units, not the Torsens and they were spendy to rebuild.

I complained to AAM about the Torsen style (AKA worm gear) differential many years ago. I asked why not use a clutch style differential? The reason given by AAM was the clutches could not handle the heat. Now we are back to having clutches in the differential?

I’m sure you guys know this...the trouble with the Torsen style unit is from a dead stop in soft sand or mud. If the vehicle is moving and one tire loses traction, it works pretty well.

Switching to an air locker removed the benefit of the one function of the Torsen differential that works well. Wow, that seems like a bad sentence.

Our truck is a 2003 3500 with 2WD and the 11.5” AAM rear end.

Ford/Bosch has/have been working on CP4.2 issues/improvements since the 2011 MY and the introduction of the 6.7 PS. GM gave up on it. Why in the H E double LL did RAM allow Cummins to go with the CP4.2 for their trucks OR maybe it is why did Cummins go along with RAM spec'ing a CP4.2 pump? The End result is two MYs of unwanted step child RAM trucks.
