I remembered seeing a guy who ran a piece of box steel in place of a y-pipe and 90's. He just made a 5" flange on both ends of the box and clamped the stacks to it. He said it worked fine. Any of you with stacks running the same setup? Will this setup work fine as far as exhaust flow? Im only asking b/c i'm going to be at the local steel yard on saturday morning and I could easily pick up the box steel for pretty darn cheap. thanks

Yes I have the set up I got it from Rob Thomas at michigan performance diesel. I works great would have liked to build my own but couldnt. I realy liked the idea caus the box steal is tuffer than reg pipe so you dont need to worry as much about stuff in the bed denting it. The set up i got is self drainging so it doesnt spluge black stuff when its wet out.

Did you bring your existing pipe up directly where you cut it off (more to pass side) or did you 45 it towards the center and then up? You get equal smoke out of both stacks right?

tubing

that is how I did mine also! It comes up into the bed in line with the exhaust , it seems to smoke equally from both stacks. I did it for the same durability reasons as Doug

pics

look in my readers rigs gallery for pics. second truck ( both done the same). 1st was 4" square 2nd was 5" square.

I want stacks, but under the truck and up the outside the sleeper. Got a auxillary fuel tank in the bed, need fuel more than I need stacks. Anybody doing it UNDER the truck?

I used 4X6X5/16 rectangular pipe. The smoke comes out the right stack about . 25 seconds before it comes out the left. The naked eye doesnt even catch it it so fast. :p

Thanks for the pic! That's just how I planned on running it. Though i only have a piece of 4x5 3/16 box. Hopefully we'll be able to make the mounting flange big enough for the stack.

OTRPU wouls look good if you run the pipe right out threw the running board. I have heard of a few guys who have some how found room to y under the truck if you can find the room shouldnt be too hard.

That's my plan. . . all it takes is money. Called custom fabrication, and I can't even light off a torch. Gotta DOC in Angola, IN, Dave's Diesel, says he "used to do them that way". Then did many Y'ed in the bed. Now the hot trip is to Y and go duals. Kids. . . get bored easily. . . this makes for lots of innovation. He thinks he can remember how to do stacks Y'ed under the truck & up through the running boards. Next issue. . . fore or aft the sleeper? I'm solo, trying to arrange so I don't have to leave the truck idle while sleeping for heat'n'air, so it ain'ta gonna bother my sleep. Purely cosmetic. Also being cosmetic it don't repay so lower on the list of needs. But would look sharp for sure.

I'm tending towards in front of the sleeper, but to add insult to injury any larger than 4in ain't gainin nuttin performance wise. And the real insult, my stacks gonna have mufflers. I've heard these engines sans mufflers. . . to each his own. Trying to visualize it with a Taylor Wing and how they'ed flow together. Now stacks even further down on the list, found out today I need upper ball joints, then allignment, then steers. Then some reason wifey is demandin the mortgage payment. Wanted the stacks by TiM, doesn't look likely now. Such is life.

You can weld the stacks to the box steel as I did. Made a coupler with the old 3" exhaust and welded it to the bottom of the box steel, then ran flex pipe up through the bed and welded it to homemade coupler. This comes up on the passenger side of the truck and I never notice the smoke coming out either side more than the other. Maybe as JTisdale said at start up you'll get a split second delay. With this HD box steel in the bed you can still use the truck for HD work. I load bricks, wood in the truck and never worry about the steel. I sprayed the steel with high temp black paint and it works great. Has held up for I think about 6 months so far. Check my readers rigs go to 1st gen stacks. Bill

That's just how I want mine to do mine on my next truck. My next truck will be a Club Cab long bed and I want to do 6" Miter Cuts.
