What may I expect in replacing the brake accumulator on my 99 4x4 ? Any special tools or instructions needed ?

Input appreciated.

More information on oil leak

This AM after truck sat all night pressed on brake pedal several times. Shortly after oil started being pushed from cap on power steering pump.

Any input appreciated.

I had that happen on my 01. I took the hydrabooster off & sent it to a brake specilty shop in Portland or. They repaired the hydra boost recharged the accumulator & shipped back all for $225. 00 which incl frieght both ways. A new one from Dodge is $600. 00 & I couldn't locate a rebuild anywhere.

It's not that difficult to change with basic tools. Be sure to drain the resivor & lines fill with fresh fluid & you will have to bleed the air out of the power steering system as well as your brakes. Because you have to seperate the master cylinder from the hyrabooster you will end up with air in the lines.

To work the air out of the power steering I jacked up the front wheels & turn the wheel from lock to lock until all the air ia gone & keep topping off the p/s fluid.

Replacing the hydroboost is very easy. The one on my truck was the first one I did and it took me maybe 30 mins at most. You don't need to unhook the brake lines off the master cylinder, don't need to bleed the brakes.

Unbolt the master cylinder from the hydroboost, leave the brake lines hooked up. Remove the p/s line from the boost. In the cab, pull the rod off the brake pedal, remove the 4 nuts that hold the booster on the firewall. Pull it out. You need to bend the brake lines a bit to get it out. It's no big deal, the lines are steel and will bend back, just don't kink them. Put new on one in reverse order.

To bleed, pump the brakes a few times, hold down with moderate force and fire it up. You may want to raise the front end so you can turn the wheel lock to lock a few times.

Napa carries the booster, I paid around $250 for the one I got.
