had to brake a bit hard with the trailer on back and i could feel the abs pulsating. went to the bank, came out and started driving. then i started hearing something like something was floating around the left rear drum (or rear end??). it sounds like a high pitched racheting. the Brake light came on, then the ABS light came on. i took the compensator rod from the frame to the axle off... . whines when i let off the throttle.

i'm going to go see if i can get the drum off (a pain).

any ideas? maybe something in the rear end?

Tom

Edit: it starts whining around 20mph... . can't get going fast enough in reverse because i barely have reverse :-{}

Could you have possibly knocked off a washer that holds one of the shoes in place? I have never seen that before, but it could be possible. The shoe will stay in relatively the same position, but could float just enough to cause some grinding noise. Or, something else broke in the drum, and is grinding between a shoe and the drum.

Is the truck stopping the same as before, is it pulling to the right or left, is one hub hotter than any other? I think you might have to tear the drum apart and look for a problem.

i thought it was the left drum... . but i ran in on jackstands (with a friend in the driver's seat). it's the rear end no doubt. i just pulled the speed sensor out and there were shavings all over it (and when i stuck my finger in there). can't say as i'm too surprised as i've had a slight wine for a while. still sucks as i need to get the transmission rebuilt too.

i thougth it was the rear end... maybe not... it may actually be coming from a drum (and resonating through the axle shaft). the noise comes and goes at different speeds in different sounds. the emergency brake has about nothing left of it. ABS and brake lights are on constantly.

After 5 miles:

-left hub is cold, but i let up on the adjusters

-right hub is hot, but i didn't touch the adjuster until a couple minutes ago

-rear end is hot. there were filings around the speed sensor yesterday. i didn't feel any filings when i stuck my fingers through the fill hole though... just foamy fluid. also, my speedo is going nuts now due to the speed sensor (junk on it? just going bad?).

i'm going to try and make it down to dad's shop and tear the truck apart.

thanks,

Tom
