Recently got a sweet deal on used '04 Quad cab 2 wheel drive w/150k miles. After 1000 miles of interstate driving had to apply brakes firmly and warning lights came on. Stopped and asked auto mechanic who was closing, to check and he said not a critical issue after looking at fluid level and pad conditions. Now that I'm home, what can a novice look at prior to succombing to a dealerships mercy in finding the problem?

My brake and abs light just came on as well. My mechanics code reader said i had an open curcuit on one of the abs sensors. I have to buy a hole new hub to fix it. In my experince, buy cheap, buy twice. Good luck.

Sensors are sold individually... .....

Buy a service manual,a dvom and start testing ;)

My lights come on almost every day. Sometimes immediately, but usually after driving a few miles. And usually while making a turn. Even with the lights on, the ABS seems to work. I've just been ignoring it for now as it doesn't seem to hurt anything.

Since they come on when making a turn, I am wondering if it is some kind of pressure sensor that erroneously thinks there is low pressure in the power steering/hyrdroboost system?

Probably one of the two wheel speed sensors in the front hubs... probably seeing a difference in speed that's out of range.

In this 3rd gen, the light popped on once and went out for almost a year... it came on this time and reset once (with the key) before it wouldn't clear. It was a speed sensor.

Thanks Steved. I'll probably just wait until my $60 unit bearings need replaced. They're on their second year of hard use and I didn't think they would last this long.
