My 04 was making some squeaking noises in the front , I pulled off the front wheel to investigate and took off brake caliper then turned hub by hand and coulld still hear the noise . (1) What size socket do I need to remove the rotor ? (2) are the threads left hand or right hand ? (3) do i need a pull to remove the rotor ? (4) is the bearing pressed into the hub , like the second gens ? I noticed the axel joint has some play in it do you think the noise could be coming from a bad axel U-joint ?? at 54,000 the brakes are shot and i might as well replace both axel U-joints any suggestions on what brands of parts to use or not to use?? Thanks for the help

Doug

I believe that the 3rd gens are the same as the 2nd gens and the rotor should just come off, you may need to use a rubber mallet to get the rust loosened up. Starting in about 2000 for the 2nd gens the rotor was moved to the outside of the hub thus eleminating the need to remove the hub to get the rotor off. The big nut in the middle is not what actually holds the hub on, it only keeps the axle shaft and bearings together. There are four bolts that come in from the backside of the knuckle that hold the bearing/hub assembly on.

Yes a bad axle joint could make a noise. Try turning the steering wheel to full lock both ways and while it is there, try turning the suspect wheel. When my RH joint went bad I couldn't turn the wheel by hand with the steering wheel at full lock.

1) the rotor floats. you want to remove the Caliper. I believe it is 18mm

2) righty tighty, lefty loosy

3) deadblow or sledge once the caliper is off. also, if they are original brakes, cut off the assembly clips on every other wheel stud.

4) the bearing is part of the hub. if you live where there is salt, prepare for a hassle, do a search for 3rd gen hubs

Thanks, dcherill I have the caliper off. I was wanting to know what size socket do I need to remove the nut on the end of the axle shaft. Any thoughts on what brake pads to buy ? Are the hawk pads Genos sells any good ? Should I go with Spicer U joints ? greasable, or sealed ? or is there another good brand out there ? Thanks, Doug

I can see some slop in the u joint, so, I figure I'll change both front u joints while I'm changing the brake pads. ( nice write up on the band saw project )

Check your drivetrain warrenty. They might replace it for free... . at the dealer. I had 64K miles with 7/70 no mods to truck.

I had mine covered and replaced drivers side.

Even if it is the non greasable ones, they will lossen all of the rust/etc and make it easy for you in the future.

this is 04. 5 truck 4wd

Iam the second owner. not sure what kind of warranty came with the truck. was thinking 3/36. Is warranty transferable to the next owner ? never bought a new truck so don't know much about warranty stuff. I know some of you guys are real experts on the subject. Doug
