Started researching brake controllers then realized I don't know squat about them. So I will ask the masters. What should I look for in one? Do they interfere with the ABS. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Brands, prices, best place to get one, benefits between different types. Are there any that I should stay away from? Trailer will probably weigh less than 6000lbs. Thanks in advance for the replies.

I've researched the web, owned a few, I like Tekonsha controllers. Reese makes a good one too. When it comes to stoppin' my babies, I go for top of the line. Check out this thread:

and Tekonsha's web site: http://www.tekonsha.com/Tekonsha/DOCS/tekcat/tekcat.html

Good luck,

I have used Tekonsha Sentinals, And Reese electronic controllers. I do not care for the Reese although many others do(too much delay before the trailer brakes kick in). The Tekonsha is a good unit for the money, but will only work off of the inertial slowing of the truck (it is activated by a pendulum). Some have had pendulum units apply the trailer brakes when trying to back up an incline. A minor inconvienience that can be dealt with. Having used these types, when it came time to set up I went with the Jordan's Research Ultima 2020. This unit attaches to the brake pedal arm, and is activated by how far you push the brake pedal. It will appply your trailer brakes even if the tow vehicles hydralic system fails(something that I hope never happens). It cost almost twice what you can find the other units for, but for me it was worth it. You can check them out here--

Sorry, it did not come up as a hyperlink when I moved it.

As noted in my sig, I use the Jordan unit. IMO, there isn't a better unit on the market. While a little more difficult to install because of the mechanical connetion, once you use it you'll know it's the one to have.

I had a great visit with Jordan at his facilities Fla. last week while on vacation. Jordan will most likely answer the phone if you call.

If you'd like more details, drop me a line.

I have the Jordan also. It seems to work quite well once you get the linkage set up correctly. I also like the digital amp meter on the front. It helps alot with the setup.

Darrick, I'm surprised that the inertia unit needs less tweeking than the 2020.

If it needed a lot of tweeking, then something was wrong. I have over 15K miles on mine and no constant adjustment has been required while in use.

I found Jordan to be quite responsive to inquires and in support of his product
