I am in the market for a new brake controller. What brand would you recommend? How difficult was the installation? Thank you for any feedback given.

There are some new features on controllers now and mine are older. I installed one on the low miles 93 and it was little trouble. There are digital readouts on the new stuff that you can set for a given trailer and use those numbers for that trailer and different settings for a different trailer. As I mentioned, all mine are older but I like the idea of a readout that can be set for the specific application.

On a related topic and this may be old news to everyone else but I discovered a unit that works on trailers with hydraulic brakes which reads the signal from your controller to apply brakes. I bought an older goosneck equipment trailer that had a vacuum over hydraulic system that looked like a nightmare to me. Got to looking on the net and found "BrakeRite" by Titan. If you ever wanted to make yourself a trailer using on old truck bed and axle, this will make it stop.

I have an older model "Tekonsha" controller and it works great. They do have alot of newer models to choose from, it depends alot on the trailer(s) you will be pulling (one axle, two axles, weight, etc. ). I would do a little research before deciding.

I have the Jordan 2020 Ultima. It uses a cable that attaches to the brake pedal. If you do a search for the Jodan 2020 Ultima you will probably find that everyone who has tried both put the Prodigy in their toolbox or threw it out.

I have two friends that pull cattle trailers to the sale and both dislike that jordan controller, both went to the prodigy, beauty is in the eyes of the beholder

hotram,

That's interesting, what did they dislike about the Jordan?

I searched TDR and DTR but couldn't find anything bad about the Jordan so that's the one I bought.

Regards,

Brian

I've tried them all but the timer based style. I love my Brakesmart! Second choice would be the old hyd tap controllers.

The Jordan is decent, but with rear drums brakes, if your auto adjusters aren't working correctly, it'll cause more pedal travel which the jordon doesn't like. My buddy has this problem as well as everytime he uses his manual button it sticks. It's been sent back to Jordon many times for the manual button problem and never gets fixed. They said it's a problem that they can't seem to correct.

I have read about the Brakesmart and prefer the sensor even better than the Jordan cable. Does the Brakesmart not have the pedal travel problem?

One thing that sold me on the Jordan was that if you don't touch the brake pedal, the trailer brakes won't activate. I read this was especially desirable in hillly, bumpy areas, like fields, where the accelerometers in the Prodigy might keep pulsing the brakes.

On our Dodge trucks, I had an issue with some sticking until I adjusted the cable. Now my cable run is very short. I didn't need the extra mounting hardware. I mounted the nearly on center with the steering column, right above the brake pedal arm. The cable is only a few inches long.

btoscano, they didnt like the cable one said he had a problem with his bih hoof knocking around and loosening it, and my other friend John just said he didn't like the idea of the extra cable being down there to where you kinda have to be aware of it is not to disturb with foot, just what they say no personal experience with the jordan.
