The only problem with Brakesmart is that you have to order one atleast 2 months before you really neede it. They are not a high production company. I'm going to have to buy brand "P" until mine gets here, then sell the other one.
I have the Prodigy and it has been a great brake controller. I don't have any other brake controller to put it up against since this is my first one. Hear great things about Brakesmart... But if money is an issue you can't beat a Prodigy.
I would go with a true proportional controller versus one of the inertial or ramped time base designs. Of these, the Brakesmart is probably the most capable, although pricey and sometimes hard to get. The Jordan Ultima 2020 is a functional close second to the Brakesmart and can be found on the Internet for <$100.
I wouldn't even bother with anything else. And, yes, I've run with inertial and ramped time base controllers.
I would replace the word "prodigy" with "sentinel". Just a cheaper version of the same controller. Doesn't have the digital readout, but still a quality product made by Tekonsha. I had mine in two trucks and with a running total of about 190K it's never let me down. The trailer brakes... well that's a different story. Next trailer WILL NOT have anything electrical at the axles. Electric over hydraulic all the way!!!
