I'm always washing my truck but this ugly brake-dust is really bad. After only a couple hundred miles after a wash it's all PIGGY again. I called EGR brake (add from our receint TDR mag) (my first as I'm a new-be) and Glenn was very helpfull. He told me the Carbon-Kevlar pads that replace the stock pads shed less material because they are more efficient and I'll use less peddle to stop.

I'm very lite-on-the peddle now and always have been,my 1990 Chevy Z-71 was never this bad, oh yes it did dust (lite gray color) after a bit but this funny maroon-color crud is driving me nutz.

Glenn at EGR told me the Carbon-Kevlars are $179. 95 a pair:eek: so now I guess I gotta decide how much this really bugs me:(

Am I the only one this anal? My 1969 Hemi Road Runner didn't poop the rims like this! (yes... . I'm a big clean freek :D )

You aren't the only one it bugs, my stock pads were very messy also and didn't last long. Carbomet pads from TDR member Sam Peterson will fix you right up for a third of the price you were quoted. Install them yourself it is very easy.

Anyone know if Autozones Performance Friction Pads are dust makers? Suppose to have a lifetime warranty. Currently using Bendix semi-metallic. Wish the rear wheels were maroon colored so they'd all match.

Brake Dust.

WT it gets better after you get some miles on it, mine was real bad especially after towing but don't see too much now after 30k miles, at least that what I've experenced on mine.

dust on your wheels

hay J B, i have the autozone carbon friction pads, and they don't require much of any brake in. they are beveled to eliminate screech. and they preform good also. but your guestion-dust-like any pad, you get a little dust but these are not noticable. after 8M mile trip, i had a hint of gray, not bad. to check your brakes, drive the blue ridge park way, good luck. just my pennys worth

Marv.

I would have to agree with Whitmore about getting an exhaust brake. The dust on my rims is minimal ever since I installed the Jacobs.

I really am not a fan of the Cleen Wheel dust covers. I had them on my car and they reduce cooling and the dust eventually leaked through and dirtied the rims anyway. I tossed them in the garbage.

Thats what I did over a year ago - I put them on all 4 wheels. . ;)

Just make sure they are going in the right direction so it will cool properly.

This is why I always buy solid wheels with no slots or holes in them. 79,000 miles on the original brakes and they're in great shape.

Thank you one and all... I now have direction and alturnatives.

This web site is awsome! This truck has 13K miles on it and is an Automatic.

The suggestions are all greatly appreciated and I will be pursewing the appropriet fix-methodes presented by the members of TDR.

You know... . it's an honor to be a member of this organization.

I JUST LOVE THIS:D

Thanks Again

William

My spelling has always been poor:rolleyes:

Just a heads up from expensive experience - be sure you don't have a sticking caliper, and be sure the rear brakes are working OK (although since you have a 2001. 5, you shouldn't have the rear drum self-adjuster problem). My 1996 3500 toasted the front brakes before I found out about these problems. :(

I haven't noticed any brake dust problem on our 2002 3500, but this may be a function of wheel offset or ????

Well, my front brakes dust up fairly heavily. I wash my truck at least twice a month in summer, and hopefully every week in winter (weather permitting). I'd say it get's irritatingly noticeable on my rims about every 1000 miles or so. When I rotate my wheels, every 5000 roughly, I also find the entire inside of each rim is just thick with dust, front and rears alike. I just rotated them this weekend, and scraped off another layer of dust from all 4.

I have 32,300 miles total on truck, and original pads front and rear. When I rotate my wheels, I also always check all 4 rotors and sets of pads to see if I have any problems developing. None so far, and I have tons of brake pad left at all 4 wheels.

Like you, I'm kind of a clean nut with my vehicles as well. I don't get to anal about it, a 4x4 truck should get dirty sometimes :D but when it's clean up time, I like Godzilla to shine real purty, too!
