My 98. 5 3500 CTD has 97k miles on it with the original brakes. The pads and shoes still look fine with maybe 50% wear.

We are leaving Feb. 1 on a 15k mile trip south and back towing a 5er and I think new brakes would be prudent.

What kind of pads/shoes do you recommend to replace my originals and still reuse my rotors and drums?

I got a price from EGR Perf. Brakes and I am sure they have a great product but I do not want to spend that kind of $$$$.

Any suggestion would be appreciated.

If you search "brakes" or "brake pad" on here you'll find a member--Tom Peterson I think that has a brake shop in WA that'll set you up with good pads.

I bought a set from him (61k on originals) and slapped them on without turning the rotors. I didn't bevel the pads either. Results are great. I got a bit of low-speed squeak after about a week. Now that's gone and there's very little soot getting on the wheels.

UPS did destroy the box the pad were shipped in, but everything was otay in the box.

I think that's Sam Peterson (not Tom).

It sounds like Sam is to brakes what Piers is to Cummins diesel performance. :D

Get the carbonmet pads and you get everything you need in the box.

I contacted Sam. He said his carbon mets for $43 are the best for the front disc pads. He said the cheapest shoe from my local supplier is the best as any of them last forever.

I like his straight forward and honest answer.

I will order pads tomorrow.

After contacting Sam by phone today to order pads I changed my mind.

As we will be in Washinton in Feb. I will take my truck to his shop and have him redo my brakes.

He said the reason for using any brand rear shoes is that there are no more cheap shoes made since asbestos was prohibited. All shoes are of good quality.
