Where is the best place to buy parts for trailer brakes? 24 ft Sportsmen with Dexter axles. Will NAPA have adjuster hardware?

Thanks,

Blake

I have purchased brake parts at RV dealers in the past but more recently I have ordered them directly from Dexter and have been pleased with the results.

RV Brake Parts Replacement

Here is the secret an old friend who is an RV mechanic shared with me:

The best source and method for RV brake repair is to go to Southwest Wheel as suggested by another member (or other trailer parts retailer), but don't buy magnets, shoes, springs, or other hardware. Buy complete new "loaded backing plates. " For approximately $45/per wheel you can buy a complete new loaded backing plate with new shoes, magnets, hardware, springs, etc. Most RV dealers will charge you approximately $25 to $30 for a new magnet alone. All you need to know is whether your trailer uses 10" or 12" brakes.

While you're at it, Southwest Wheel also stocks bearings and seals at a very reasonable price.

Thanks for your help guys!

I was able to pick up an adjuster and spring (in one package) from NAPA. They also had ONE seal - I had to hunt for the other seals. Autozone and Advance auto did not have and could not cross the seals.

The rest of the brakes look fine. I'm going to wash out all the bearings and repack them and reinstall.

Hey Blakers?

Your adjuster springs weren't light blue were they?On my 97 TT the Dexter Axels came equipped with defective adjuster springs. Bad news when they break. I had a drum blow out. If you have the baby blues contact Dexter ASAP. They will make em right.

I don't recall the color, but it could have been blue. Anyway, the kit was not a Dexter kit. It was the NAPA brand, so I should be ok.

Thanks a lot!

Yah the best way to go is with the full backing plate ect. I made a mistake and startin replacing parts. I have about 50K on my 96TT, over western US> I replaced all 4 wheels, had the drums turned(the mag side too). Cost me $120. I did the work myself
