Here is what happened. I was driving in four wheel drive up in the snow last weekend. Got about as far as i could go and let off the go pedal. Put the truck in reverse and put my foot on the brake... . Hard as a rock and we are on a role backwards. I can hear a squealing sound from the engine compartment. I push as hard as i can i sort of a panic... and we stop. I place the truck in park and test the brakes again... all is fine. So i continued backing down the hill, turned arround and went home. Monday morning on my way to work i noticed that i must push harder on the brakes to come to a stop. Almost like what hapens after you go through standing water and your brakes get wet... . However mine are not. I have four wheel ABS and new brake pads all the way arround... . My fluid levels are good and power steering seems fine. Any ideas?

If i had a buck for every time i herd that!

Wickersham is on Highway 9 north of Sedro Woolley about 12 miles and south of Acme about 5 miles. Don't blink you will miss it!

Get ahold of Sam from Sam's brakes. He 's real good at troubleshooting and was a great help for me.

Get ahold of Sam Peterson of Olympia Wash. He owns Rapid Brake and is to Brakes what Bill Kondolay is to Trannys. He hasent posted for some time but his e-mail used to be

BRAKE PROBLEM : Check your check valve coming out of the vacum pump. My 96 did the same with me and thats what happened. The vale stuck and you are not getting your Power brake boost. .

Dick.

Could have been snow/ice build up on the face of the pads. We used to get that ice racing cars if the snow was deep enough...

When you replaced the pads did you clean and lube the pins the calipar slides on? Another thing to check is the the pads move freely in the calipar, rust build up can make them drag but not to the degree you describe.

Thanks for the replies!

TrailBoss: Good idea but... my brakes are not vacum assist. Are there any check valves with a Hydraulic setup? I will give a call to the pro's this week if i cant find a simple solution. If worse comes to worse... . has anyone replaced the pump or the booster? What fun things does it involve?

Its a snow day!.... and im bored.

Does anyone have a service manual that shows any serviceable parts on the brake booster? I think the pump is fine because I can steer with the brake on the floor. It must be something in the booster / master cylinder. Today is a good day to take things apart.
