brake problems

We are having problems with our 91 4x4 pulling to right and left when braking especialy in turns. If the brakes are pumped up there is no problem bleeding the rear brakes also helps for about a week but we are not loosing any fluid. The ABS is unpluged at the back and the master and wheel cylinders have been replaced. The linnings are half way to replacement. We bought this truck used and the brakes never worked as well as my original 91 purchased new. Does anyone have any soloutions.

muskyman, are your rear axle seals leaking? If they are, they will cause a pull. Check your front calipers, does one side have thinner pads than the other indicating rusted or sticky pistons. If not, check for loose front wheel bearings. Are the rear shoes adjusted correctly? If all those are okay, then check the front tie rod ends and the steering box/ steering coupler/ drag link for wear or looseness. Just my thoughts!

mine is doing it too I checked the rear end and it was low I suspected a faulty real seal but how would that cause it to pull. mine pulls to the left sometimes it's really bad how hard is it to change that seal you have to remove the axle any suggestions would be appreciated

countryboy, you'll need to pull the axle shafts out and get a special socket to remove the nut that holds the bearings and hub/drum assembly together on the spindle. Careful, it's heavy since the drum and hub are integral. They'll separate if you punch the wheel studs out. Won't have to do that though. You will see the seal at the end of the hub inside the drum. Use a seal puller or adequate tool to pull the seal out. Watch out, that gear oil is messy. Install seal. Reverse order to reinstall. Check "endplay" of bearings, torque large spindle nut until proper preload is met and torque axle shaft nuts to spec. Don't know the specs offhand, refer to service manual or dealership for info. The pull is usually caused by the gear lube mixing with the brakedust which causes the shoes to grab the brakedrum and sometimes not release.
