I took my truck in today for service on rear seal leak. While there (Dodge Dealer) they informed me that I was close to needing new brake shoes and asked if I wanted to go ahead and replace those. I asked how much they ran, and I almost fell out of my chair when they quoted $215. just for the price of the shoes... with a total cost in the $350 range with labor. Doesn't $215 for shoes seem a tad high? I searched other posts and didn't see a lot of info although it looks as if some folks have found shoes for around $65 which seems more like it to me...

Come on guys make me feel better, tell me there are some shoes out there that won't eat up my Christmas bonus. :D

I've seen the following around here:

19. 99+19. 99 core at Autozone don't know brand

45. 00+20. 00 core at PepBoys for Raybestos

65. 00+20. 00 core at some places for Wagner's

I ended up not needing them after I pulled the drums, just needed adjustment on mine.

I just replaced mine. Sam Peterson said it was a waste of money to buy the more expensive shoes for the rear. At 90K miles my shoes were hardly worn but had a lot of hairline cracks.

PS, paid about $20 for Brakebest at ORielys

I replaced mine with a set from NAPA. They were pricey too as I recall. I had a bad experience with cheap brakes on my Dad's car a few years ago (he was sitting next to me at the time) and will NEVER repeat that one.

there is not a lot of difference in the quality of brake lining these days like there use to be before the ban on asbestos. A lot of companys difference between economy and premium is nothing more than a paint job on the shoes It is cheaper for the factory to market a premium product at a lesser price than to have a different formulation for the lining mix. ----Sam
