Brakes acting very weird *UPDATE* STILL need help!

About a month & 1/2, two months ago now I blew a HG and pulled my head and had it oringed. When we reinstalled my head we caught the vaccum line that goes to the transfer case between the block and the head. It ran this way for about a week before I found and fixed the problem by running a piece of air brake hose from the plastic T in the engine compartment back to the original plastic line. I just originally overlaped the two by sliding the original line into the air brake hose. Took about another week before I got under there and actually wrapped some black tape around it (yeah I know I'm a procrastinator ).



Now my brakes are acting very weird. Sometimes I can hit the pedal and have immediate pressure, and sometimes the pedal goes 1/2 way to the floor before getting any pressure. When it does its a very scary feeling b/c it feels like it is going to the floor!



Any thoughts and suggestions? At first I just thought it was where it would still be leaking out where the lines overlap each other, but now that I fixed that I don't know what it could be, and I really want to get this figured out soon!

Mine does the same thing. I had instant brake pressure before I had my rear drums serviced. Now it varies as yours does. I'd like to fix mine as well. Keep us posted.

Said it was either Power Steering related, or the master cylinder. PS pump checked out so it must be the master. :{



Well I never did get a chance to change my PS fluid. I figured since it was nearly full and only require a little to top off with no noticeable changes that it wasn't the source.



Brakes still act the same... ... ... normal most times... ..... the once or twice you hit the pedal and get the eyes b/c it goes 1/2 way to the floor! I had my old chevy do this on me once, but the pedal went ALL the way to the floor... ..... that made for interesting stoping conditions!



Guess I'm gonna get ready to shell out $114 + tax at the local auto parts store. :{ :{ :{ :{ :{ :{

Have you checked the hydroboost system out?



It could be the nitrogen charged cansiter for the hydroboost system. From what I understand the canister should be tight and you should not be able to wiggle it where it mounts up near the master cylinder. If you grab it with your hand and can move it around then it has lost it's charge and this will affect your braking because it acts as a reserve. There is another way to test it out with the motor off, do a search on hydroboost and you should be able to find a bunch about this unit. mine used to do the same thing, I changed the master cylinder and it did it a few times more I re-bled the master cylinder and then everything and it has never happened again, it has been a about a year now.

Joe when you say you re-bled the master cylinder do you mean "bench bleed" or do you mean you re-bled it on the truck



I replaced my MC this morning and the brakes are some what better, but still out of every 4 or 5 times hitting the pedal one time it still goes 1/2 way to the floor before getting pressure! #@$%! #@$%!



Going to have someone else look at it tomorrow. I was really hoping to not have to "throw parts at it" to fix it. #@$%! So far $160 down the drain I really didn't need to waste. #@$%! :{ :{ :{

Well the same thing has happened to me and occasionally still does. My brakes seem mushy all the time. I have had the MC replaced twice. Bench bled and re bled on truck as well. Now the mechanic wants to change out the accumulator valve on the frame driver side rear. It has to do with the ABS I think. Probably another $300 or more.

Man the brakes on this truck really suck. Anybody had these symptoms and had them fixed?

The guy that's looking at mine tomorrow mentioned them same thing you did. He said he had some things we could try first though before replacing anything else, but I had to get to work today so we didn't time. Convienent he's helping my cousin rebuild his 92 IDI in my basement anyways. :-laf



Hopefully I will see some kinda of improvement tomorrow, I'm going to flush my power steering fluid too. MAN! I had my previous 97 2500 for 2 & 1/2 years and 77,000+ miles without so much as a hint of brake problems. :{



Still open to any and all thoughts/tips/info/suggestions.

Went to install new bleeders in the calipers today because the OEM's were clogged up. Had my father start pressing the brake pedal for me... ... heard a squishing sound like a fluid leaking somewhere.



Got out from under the truck and under the hood, and power steering fluid was leaking out from under the cap??



Any idea what would cause this?
