I've been noticing that when I'm braking and I hit a sizeable bump, my brakes lose almost all their braking power for a couple of seconds. Kidna scary!

Have any of you had this happen to you? Does this mean my brakes are going or does it have to do with the ABS system?

I've had it happen, always thought it was the ABS.

If your tire leaves the ground while braking, such as on a bump, the ABS system reads it as wheel lockup and will release the brake.

Welcome to the wonderful world of 4 wheel ABS! I'm so glad I only have rear wheel on my truck - one of it's selling points for me. I know it feels like a couple of seconds but it's probably closer to a . 25-. 5 seconds. I actually rear-ended a car in my last truck that I would have stopped just shy of in my last truck that had 4w ABS.

ABS are actually a great system if they are installed right.

What most people don't know is that if you lock up your front wheels that don't have ABS, and you turn the wheel, the car will not turn! ABS helps here b/c only a spinning wheel will turn a car. , but most people continue to keep their wheels locked out of fear.

Threshold braking is best, but most people hit the panic button and don't do it.

I think ABS are a great invention, but when they aren't installed correctly or malfunction like mine, they are a pain.

Yes I seem to recall that when I attended a small university in Missouri the hot rodders called locking front brakes, while back wheels were still turning(foot on the go pedal), power braking. Something about bringing the back-end around, or getting the back end to align with the front end. It's been along time ago don't remeber exactly and never tried it.
I think that's the same thing that happens when you lock up your front brakes up and turn the wheels but your rear anti-lock ones keep turning(not as fast if you were power braking) causing you to have no control of the direction your going.
BTW I have seen power braking used two ways.
1. To do donuts(360's) from stopped position.
2. At this college during pylons races(oranges cones placed in back parking lot) while driver behoing wheel of cars or trucks were moving thru the cones as fast as possible. Best time won.
