I have noticed recently that when cold, the brakes on my 99 3500 grab terribly for the first few stops of the day and then again if it sits for awhile. I tore the rear drums off a few months back and they were warped but the shoes looked fine. I put new drums on and adjusted everything and the problem went away for about a month and a half. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

This is usually caused by flash rusting of the drums and is often worse in humid or rainy weather. As far as I know there is nothing you can do about it except be aware of it and take a few gentle stops before getting out in traffic.

It might be rust, but Sam Peterson (the local brake guru, do a search on his name) clued me in... ..... the shoes on these rigs swell in humid and wet weather, and only when you get some heat built up do they get to a point where the grabbing goes away.

I have the same year as you but a 2500, mine has done it since 6 months after I bought it. Will deal with it soon, as its time for the rears to be done anyway. As I recall, Sam said it might be something we have to live with due to lack of asbestos in newer shoes. If I got this all wrong I apologize, its been a year (?) or so since I broached this on the site.

mine does it down here in South Texas... It's always so humid here, you can drink the air! it is so saturated with water! I cannot imagine how ya do it over there in Victoria! I know its REALLY bad there! Good luck, and just do a little power brake in the morning. . thats how I fix my problems with it everyday.

Brake fix

I got so damm tired of the brake grab and loosing rubber from the rear tires. I converted from drums to disc brakes. No more problems. Best way to go
