Here is one for all the great minds at TDR. I have a 2001. 5 4x4 2500 auto with 45000 miles, stock engine, and stock tyranny.

Here is the problem, when rolling to a stop at about the last 3 ft of the roll, steady brake pressure it seems like the brakes release for about a second and then grab. The pedal does not sink and the pressure is the same on the pedal. The anti skid does not chatter, as matter of fact there is no noise associated with this, just brake release, but not complete release and then it grabs and stops. Now while sitting there with the same amount of brake pressure the truck lurches, like it going to take off on its own. I have the brake on at a constant pressure, again no pedal sink. Now after this little episode if I release the brakes the truck will not roll on it’s own. It takes more power or pedal to get it going than it usually does. Normally the truck will roll at about 5 mph on it’s own at idle on a flat surface. Now to add to the matter, had a Dodge dealer read the codes in the Anti skid system, we even did a drive brake test with box hooked up, no codes, no faults and of course it did not do this at the dealership. So where am I guys? I thought it was the ABS system at first, now I’m not so sure now, could it be the transmission. Also it seems like it does it only after the first stop after start up and again not all the time. I do not tow, just a driver back and forth to work and a little crawling in the woods during hunting season. Thanks for any advice you can give.

I have no idea what the cause could be but it sounds like you need to isolate it between the braking system and the drivetrain. Have you tried to reproduce the condition in neutral? Have you tried to reproduce the condition using the emergency brake? If it happens in some conditions and not others, you should be able to isolate the cause a little better. Hope this helps!

Thanks ,ya I have tried different conditions, neutral etc, I guess I should have mentioned it in the first thread. The lurch foward when sitting at a stop feels like you have just but in gear, form this I getting the sense that it is the trans. Took it to the dealer and had them change atf and filter for the first time... I don't know if is me hoping for a easy fix, but it seems like it's shifting smother and the problem has not reoccured.

Brake

Disconnect[ ABS]

hydraulic control unit,DON"T WORRY YOU WILL STILL HAVE BRAKES,Remove the wire harness connections from unit ,then post back results. It could be the ABS unit, or the RWAL valve, to name only two, try to eliminate the brakes system first.

Maybe this thead should be over in the 2GEN"S

When it won't move and feels like its holding back MANUALY PULL IT DOWN IN 1ST(LOW) and see if it grabs andf goes. Sounds to me like trans is in 2nd gear on startoff.

Twest, Dpketchum, Though I was in second gen when first posted. Thanks for the ideas, I will try pulling manualy into low first. Will be on the road today, on the drive in maybe this thing will raise in head again. Truck will sit for a couple days. I will reply when I return from RON. Thanks again for posting to a 2nd gen truck, good ideas.

That's your governor pressure sensor/solenoid in the transmission valve body causing that. It's a common problem. An unscrupulous transmission shop would tell you your transmission is shot because Dodge transmissions are junk and it need to be rebuilt and your wallet needs a cleanin'. An honest transmission shop will replace the solenoid and send you on your way. :D

I had my '01. 5 done at our local Chrysler Jeep dealership. I trusted them with my diesel truck over the Dodge dealership.

Mine deteriorated over a few days to the point I had to use the shift lever and drive it like a standard. It worked fine that way until I could get the solenoid replaced.

Thanks Steve, I thought it was in the trans. I talked to a tech at the dealership the other day when I had the fluid changed and he mentioned seleniod in the trans. It does not happen all the time, so I should expect it to fail some where down the line.

I hope it is covered under the warranty.

I hate to be out in left field... but with a power assist that is a function of fluid pressure in the power steering system... . could this be nothing more than a loose belt or slipping pump and under certain demand conditions... . the pump or system just doesn't have the ability to keep up. . making the brakes feel strange...

Like the defroster starts up... which turn on the A/C compressor just as you turn the wheel... at idle you've loaded the engine with the A/C and power steering system at once. . and the pressure drops for a fraction of a second and it feels like you don't have any brakes.....

Just a thought... .

Jelag thanks for the thought, but I really believe it is in the trans. As DPKetchum suggested in a pervious thread I manually put it into low and felt the trans shift down into 1st and it pulled away from a stop on it’s own, meaning I did not have to step on the pedal to get it to roll. This is how the truck would act before this problem occurred. (Rolling on it’s own) Also it is happening on a regular basis now, not every time but more than before, and always straight away, no turning when it occurs. If the belt were lose I would think you would here a squeal or something of that nature. I wonder do these new belt design squeal like the old use too? Thanks for the input.

Hey DpKetchum, what ballpark price should I expect to get this repaired, do not have a good trans shop that I know of so I am stuck with a DC dealer. I have about 42000 miles on it, is that a warranty item covered under a standard warranty package?

It would be covered under 7/70 if the truck is a 7/70 truck. If its trans. If not depending on age of truck I would call D. C. and ask for assistance as it was a 3/36 item and with D. C. knowledge of problems with the 47re they may jump in on that low of mileage. Otherwise not familiar with straight cost of repair. If its a external solenoid I would not think very much. If its internal in trans a seizable amount. Then I would call D. C. for assistance at 42k. Need a GOOD trans tech to check it out at a D. C. dealer first.

Thanks, I am taking it in Mon to the DC dealer. Should know something tommorrow, will reply and let you all know what happens. I will call DC about this issue, mine is 3/36 but has in warrenty info 5yrs or 50000 miles for trans control module or power train control module under heavey duty truck. Hope one of those covers it. Thanks again

Well I am $439 lighter in my pockets, but a least my truck does not stumble around looking for first gear any more.

It was the Solenoids Transmission Governor and the Transducer Pressure Sensor showing about 1. 5 amps low. 3 amps needed to turn on a light but bad enough to cause the trans to skip first and start off in second. If it was not for all the good folks here I might have burned out the trans before I realized what was going on.

Thanks all for chiming in, you guys are great!

Sent the invoice and a letter of to DC, hope they will give some consideration to a truck with 43000 miles.

Thanks again.

Should have ASKED the SERVICE MANAGER FIRST. He's got some authority to make SOME decisions in house then CALLED D. C. before repairs completed. just a hint. YOU NEED to CALL D. C. customer care asap. NOT just a LETTER.

I talked to Service Manger and had no luck, he said it was out of his hands that I need to talk to DC. I should have mentioned that but did not,,, so I called DC they said to send in the info as I stated and they will review it.

The dealership would not budge on the fact that I was out of warranty plus I was out of town and did not purchase the truck through the place that was doing the repairs. .
