if the antilock brakes sensed a wheel starting to skid it may have dumped the brake pressure to the axle that the lockup occured. it will give you a lower than normal pedal and a spongy feel--all normal for the conditions---Sam
Sam's right. I took mine to the dealer over it when it was newer. I have the 4wheel antilock option and was told it will do that under a panic stop. Sometimes I'd rather not have the ALB at all.
My 98 with just Rear ABS will do this in a panic stop. I have found that adjusting the rear brake shoes helps prevent the problem. If your way out of adjustment on the back, and the ABS kicks in, it will feel like more then 1/2 your brakes went away. and Yes, it will scare you the first couple times.
My answer is to keep the rear shoes adjusted (about every 7500 miles when I change the oil)

It appeared during a panic stop my brakes were spongy. It happened so fast. Anyone else have this problem?
