Just recently I had bought a set of those Geno's Hawk carbon ferro brake pads and had a Midas do the install since I have little time on my hands for truck service. Well, I needed new rotors as well as calipers so I had them replaced along with my new pads. After I had broke them in for about 100+ miles, they started to squeak at times.

But the weird thing is, they only squeak if I apply minimal to moderate pressure on the pedal. Once they start squeaking, the more pedal pressure I apply the squeaking goes away. Another factor is that I notice they seem to squeak more on these hot summer days. In the morning it's definately cooler on the way to work, they don't squeak.

Anyone, have any squeaking issues with their Hawk pads from Geno's? If so, what did you do to eliminate it, or is there a way to stop the annoying sound?

Try going out jamb brake pedel hard and lock up the wheels, And then the noise will be gone. Let me know. It works every time.
 
I was just going to say the same thing. Run 'er up to about 60 and shut it down as fast as you can once. That should do it. The pads aren't mated to the rotor surfaces yet. And if you don't do it, they can glaze over and you don't want that.

Well, damn, I hope I didn't do that already. I'll have to give it a try and see what happens. I have ABS so the tires should not lock up, but I'll give 'er an 'ol slam on the brakes and see what happens. I'll let ya know after lunch. :)
 
The issue is not the surface of the pads squeeking when applied to the rotors. The squeek is coming from the vibration of the pads against the calipers. As you apply more pressure the calipers eliminates the vibration and the squeek stops. Typically most brake shops applied a silicon to the back of the pads to eliminate this noise. Guess they didn't do that for you. The cure that has worked the best for me, learned from this forum is duct tape on the back of the pads. It will eliminate the squeeking noise.

The high performance pads, being harder, are more prone to squeal under light braking. As Doug said, there are all kinds of anti-squeal pads, goop, etc. that go between the brake pads and caliper or caliper pistons that will help. Maybe Midas forgot to use some... :rolleyes:

Well, went out at lunch and tried the really hard stopping. It seemed to clear it up, but again when I gave it light pedal pressure I would still get a slight squeak, but not as loud as before. I did a hard stop from about 50-60mph 3 times and after I got back to work, you could smell the brakes heating up a bit so I would say they are pretty seating now.

When you guys mentioned that the calipers need lube for assembly, well, there is quite a lot of lube around the grooves where the caliper mounts, so I don't think I am in need there. Does it tend to wash off ever if you fequently wash you truck like every other week? I hose down my under-carriage pretty good whenever I wash my truck and that also means hosing the brakes down pretty good as well. Can you spray any WD-40 on the caliper mounting points to lube them back up after a wash, obviously being careful not to spray any on the rotor or the pad?
 
hahahaha yeah that works but becarful where u do it, the last time in locked up my breaks and wheels i slid right into a guide wire next to a tellphone pole and ripped every replacable part from the front right blinkder to my rear dually fender!

Must have been on some icy road, huh? Don't you have ABS? Mine does not lock up cuz of the ABS, but it sure will shake the hell out of the truck if I really need to stop hard.
 
take the pads off, put some anti squeak material on the back of the pads (not the pad surface), put them back on and the problem will be gone.
 
I have a similar issue except mine intermittenly squeek at low speed and it goes away with braking. If I lightly ride the brake it stops. A TDR member gave me this advice and I am finally going to get to it this weekend.



Try removing the "rust ring" as I call it on the inboard & outboard edges on the rotor where the edges of the pads create a chamfer especialy on the inside @ the smallest diameter. This ridge I'm refering too is a buildup of rust & crud and forms a glassy appearence and when you rotor expands from heat it will squeel like someone gently rubbing their finger on the edge of a wine glass. I used a flat chisel and a hammer and gently chipped away at it. You will need to remove the caliper to do this.
