and the truck runs nice and smooth. 55,100 miles, but I think it's been slowly going for a while, looking back now. Here's the tech's report on the work order:

Truck shudders at 1800 RPM. Test drove, verified. Checked w. DRB, has fault code PO216 Inj Pump Timing failure. Tested Press into filter 13. 5 PSI - Filter out - 13. 5 PSI IDLE. 9 PSI W. O. T. Vacuum 1. 5". Contacted S. T. A. R. [name omitted] - wants fuel sample taken & Press reading at W. O. T. , 35 MPH, 3RD gear. Fuel has no water in it, has small black specs. Press 8. 5 LBS at 35 MPH, W. O. T. 3RD gear. Called STAR, talked to [different name], gave info, recommended INJ pump. [bunch of numbers of parts].

Replaced INJ pump, bled air from system, started, runs good. Test drove, buck, misfire at 1800 RPM gone.

And sure enough, it is. Maybe subjective, but if definately feels smoother. Wonder if I'll pick up any mileage? Once again, kudos to Frontier Chrysler/Dodge/VW in Burlington, WA. Got it checked and fixed and back to me a day early. Thanks guys!

Joel, did they cover it all under warranty?

Can you elaborate more on how it ran, the symptoms you experienced??

My truck shudders if I free rev it around 2100rpm, most pronounced and that RPM but does it at other speeds. Hasn't idled smoothly since new. Gradually getting worse. Dealer didn't get any codes on it when I took it in to be checked. Evan Beck is pretty sure it is my injection pump but I'm wanting to cover all my bases first and avoid the dealer. I have 46,800 miles now.

Yes, it was covered under warranty.

It better have been - the service manager told me the pump alone is $1900!

As for what happened... I was coming home from a little trip up to Monte Cristo. Under loads, I noticed a shuddering and skip from the engine. Thought I was imagining it at first, but after a while, there was no doubt. anything over 1800 RPMs with a load on and I'd get the shudder/miss. My first thoughts were the 15 miles or so of Mountain Loop highway (a dirt road from the Monte Cristo road to Darrington) plugged the air filter. Nope, it was fine. Bad load of gas, perhaps? Changed out the fuel filter and while it was indeed dirty, it wasn't blocked. Only had about 8K on it, too. My next thought was the lift pump, so I called the dealer and asked if it was a warranty item at 55K and they said yes, so I brought it in. Had it not been covered, I'd have done it myself. They ran the tests and you've seen the results.

It didn't do anything at all abnormal without a load on the engine. I could have revved it to redline and it was fine. Load it up and it was done. Not sure about the rough idling... it does seem to idle better now. Before I took it in, the tach needle would fluctate a little but now it's rock solid at around 850 (stupid 125RPM markings!). That's about all I can tell you, Vaughn - hope it helps.

Wow Joel... kinda sucks it happened in the first place. Hey,in the tech readings it says he measured a 1. 5" vacuum at WOT (bad lift pump). He did remember to replace the lift pump also, right? Wouldn't want your new injection getting toasted.

Did you ever swap ECM's with someone liek you were going to try? I don't recall seeing a post stating you completed that test?

not sure what vacuum he measured....

but no, they didn't replace the lift pump because the pressures at the filter were good. 13. 5psi at idle and 8. 5 and 9. 0 at 35mph WOT.

If it dies again because the lift pump is bad, I've got another 45K on the warranty.

Maybe the vacuum is something different?

Joel, your symptoms were a lot different than mine, but thanks for the details anyway :)

Bill, I think I'll try your ECM. It must be the one Lawrence sent ya. He'd just shipped it to you when I was down in LV.

Swapping that out will really help narrow it down. I also have a CPS on order but it will be 2 weeks, upgraded Cummins part number that is on backorder.

Sending you a PM. Thanks Bill!
