I've got a '98. 5 24v 5-speed [stock truck, no mods, no gauges]. I just replaced the stock air filter with a high-efficiency one and also installed a dual-remote bypass oil filter. Started it up, everything sounded good. The next day I took it for a ride and noticed an entirely new noise coming from the general area of the turbo. It's like a moan, directly in sync with the engine RPMs, loudest around 2000 RPM. Can be moderately loud. Kinda similar to power steering moan but on the wrong side of the engine compartment. Doesn't begin until one or two minutes after initial startup. There's no difference in power. All [stock] gauges look fine. Turbo sounds good and smooth. No smoke. Fluids look fine. Truck runs great except for this weird noise.
My mechanic looked at it and immediately agreed it was making a strange noise. We pored over it for a while and decided it was coming from the turbo. He was stumped as to what it was but thought maybe it was the new air filter passing air easier. I was wondering if it was the remote oil filter hoses vibrating or something. As you can see, we're grasping at straws. Any ideas?
