Went to Checkers to get the Compression fitting for the EGT probe and they only had brass. What is the melting point of brass and will this work before I drill the manifold? DW

You are taking a chance using brass. There are many different combinations of copper, tin, zinc, and lead that can be called brass. Some melt as low as 1100*F and some melt as high as 2000*F. I would find a steel or stainless steel fitting for the EGT fitting. These will be around and in good shape long after your pistons melt and run into the oil pan.
