The main thing you're breaking in is the diffs. Take it easy for the first few dozen miles, let it cool off completely, repeat this a few times until you have a couple hundred towing miles on, then go for it.
It took me a couple of weeks to get all the towing stuff outta the old '91 into the new '02 - but as soon as we could, it was off to the hills with our 7000 lb or so 5er load. I probably had plenty of short-run empty miles by then, but we've been running loaded plenty since then, with no babying or special treatement - just run it as hard as we feel like, and keep ALL the engine and drivetrain well serviced!
As more than one guy has pointed out, ya don't see many owners running their 18-wheelers around empty or slow to break them in - it's just load-and-go from day one! Sure the machinery is a bit different - but the principle is the same!
I waited until i had 1400 miles on my truck before I did any "real" towing with my truck. I took my 29' TT through the mountains with the whole family on board for a week stay with the trailer and the truck loaded for the STAY, AND DIDN'T HAVE A SINGLE PROBLEM WITH THE TRUCK THE ENTIRE WEEK. Good luck with yours.
